Do you reckon 3 plants (from the same tuber) in a small space will produce smaller tubers than if I pruned it back to 1 plant?

Maybe, but I doubt it would affect the cumulative amount harvested.

If you planted one tuber you have one pant. The three shoots aren't separate plants. They're all part of the same plant. When the top growth is going strongly new tubers will start to be formed. But how many you’ll get in a 14” pot I don't know. I’ve only ever grown them in the ground.

I didn't know that if they come from one tuber they're all part of the same plant - good to know! I figured that if you can cut up a tuber and each eye will grow into a different plant that they're kinda unrelated to one another. Thanks floral :)

But did you cut up the tuber? If not it’s one plant. If you did they are separate plants but clones.

The question is would you get better "quality" tubers if you cut down to one or two stems? I don't know. These are big plants, that do take up a lot of room. I would think if you cut a stem off, it would try to regrow again and you would have to keep cutting it until it gives up.

I would just leave it be and let grow like it wants, and see what you get. Next year you could try to plant less "eyes" if you think there wasn't enough room.

As for this year, the general consensus I'm hearing from the handful of people I've asked is to be to just let it be and not thin them out, so I guess that's what I'll do. I've got a couple of pots, each with a different number of plants popping up, ranging from 5 per pot to 1 per pot. It'll be interesting to see and compare the results in the Fall.
