Carol23, I think you are right. I took some additional photos.

I dug it out because if it is stokesia, I don’t have room for it to grow. When I saw the root, I was glad I did. As I had mentioned, I didn’t plant it there so, I don’t know, I guess a couple of random seeds blew in from somewhere. I could not believe the size of these roots! At first I thought I had dug up part of my peony rhizome because of it’s proximity.

thanks for your help! In an open field, I’m sure it’s pretty, but I have mostly a hosta garden in a city lot.
