I also resisted the black hardware with white doors. I do not have much black in and around my house like you do. I think that your pewter pick will look fine.

BTW- I have resisted many ideas that my daughter (my designer) has suggested. 😄

I have white doors with black hardware, I love it. BUT, this is my house not yours, if you don't like it don't get it, find what you are comfortable with and go with it.

Want to add, I disagreed with my designer on several issues, sometimes quite strongly. I love her, she is a great designer, she told me she had strong opinions sometimes when I first interviewed her and she was right, that said I absolutely loved working with her.

Don't paint yourself into a corner with pewter. Just select the satin nickel so that if you want fixtures, lights, or furniture to match you have options. Not many manufacturers offer pewter as a finish.

The satin nickel would look fine. A lot of designing is personal preference, so go with what you like.

I have had the exact white door setup in BeverlyFLADeziner’s comment for several years now. I have not tired of the satin nickel at all. Back then I was urged to use ORB.

Door hardware takes up the tiniest bit of space on a big white door, and with you listing all the other black elements it seems that you are worried more about having too much black and less about this particular piece of black. But it’s your house so communicate this to your designer.

Maybe that's right. I feel like I would be committing to everything black, which might affect my furniture and wall colors. Limiting my options to cool over warm.

This is why I didn't use an interior designer.

The black hardware is ’in’ as far as kitchen design - silver/nickel, not as much. Gold is trending, more so. Plus, with black countertops, black in light fixtures, etc. - what would you expect your designer to tell you?? But it is your space, and you get to have what you want. Period.

I like the look of the black hardware against white but I had several people tell me they scratch easily and don’t hold up well over time. I went with brushed nickel. You could always use that as a reason why you don’t want black if you’re afraid you are going to offend her for some reason.

What are you planning for cabinet hardware?

As kempek01 mentioned, if you don’t like it, speak up! Ask for alternatives! You’re paying her. She’s an adult, she can take it.

What about gunmetal color. It is not the harsh black.

Thank you all. I am not at all afraid to speak up to my designer and have done so. But since she is a trained professional and giving me that advice, I was worried that going against it would be a bad idea. I was simply asking here for other people's opinions as to how the other finishes would look (pewter and satin nickel). I also was concerned that using black door hardware boxes me into a corner color-wise for the rest of the house (forcing me to cool tones), or maybe I am already there with the other things I have going on. Answering Idecor54, I was planning on stainless or something close to that for kitchen cabinet hardware. I think black hardware with the black counter is too much in that space. But I am open to suggestions since that will come up soon for decision!

@Dusty Dus- We just completed a new build with black windows and used black door hardware throughout our home. All interior doors are white. I do not think black locks you into using cool tones. Black can be used with both warm and cool tones.

Did your designer offer you any alternatives after you discussed not liking the black hardware?

Based on your lighting fixtures, the home's aesthetic appears to be very contemporary, and black is very 'in' right now. On your fixtures, did you select the black finish or the brushed aluminum? Many of our clients' homes are modern and they seem to select either brushed aluminum, stainless steel, or powder-coated to match the door. Brushed aluminum and stainless are also very modern and stylized, which holds up well over time.

My Spanish style house has black matte hardware on crisp white doors and all my colors are warm, so I disagree that it pushes you to a cool and very modern look. I went to a bunch of model homes a few months ago ... I can't tell you what the hardware even looked like, because it is a detail that just fades into the background, unless you happened to be shopping for hardware on the day you looked at the models and were looking out for that details.

I just went back to look at the photos that I took while at the model homes and the few doors that showed in the photos all had the brushed stainless ... which might be a reason to do something different than what big production builders are putting in $1 mill to 3 mill spec houses.

If all your cabinet hardware is going to be nickel/stainless, you can easily go with the nickel door hardware following up with fixtures being in the same family.you seem more comfortable going that direction. Black isn’t right or wrong, just personal preference

I just got back from looking at Emtek Levers in person and fell in love with the tumbled white bronze! I need to do some research on it (I know it's a live finish). Emtek said there is white bronze under the finish and it will change towards a nickel color. Anyone have any experience with this finish over time?

Supposedly the Bronze collection has a sturdier/beefier latch mechanism and this is also one of the few manufacturers that don't have a big jump in price when you go from brass base metal to bronze base metal. I was at a showroom recently and the owner gave me an informative tutorial about hardware and some of the differences between brands!

I like my door hinges, and stoppers when needed, to match the knobs, so something to keep in mind when picking a finish

Go with your gut feeling. I love the Emtek line of handles. Hardware is like jewelry for the home; quite a personal choice. Remember your designer is there to assist you and not dictate your choices. I disagreed with my kitchen designer on a few issues and got exactly what I wanted. I am still happy in my choices several years later. Please post pictures when your home is done. I am in the process of deciding on new door handles for my entire home too. I am taking my time on my decision. Best of luck in your journey ❣️
