Japanese Maple?

Planted this Japanese maple 3 years ago in Metro Detroit Southeast Michigan. There's a scar on the trunk I don't recall seeing before. Any reasons for why this may have happened? Anything I should do next? The biggest pest problem here is carpenter ants. But I don't see them active near the tree. Many thanks for your help.
