Murphy beds have come a long way IMO. You can get doors suited to lots of different styles, and keep the bed out of sight when you need to use your office. Something painted or stained in a dark shade might work in a Spanish revival interior.

My friend has a Murphy bed in her home office. It folds up and bookshelves fold in front of the bed frame so you don't just see a big board.

A good quality blowup mattress can work fine for occasional guests, unless they are very elderly. A Murphy bed or daybed may be better options for guests staying a long time.

I hate having to sleep on an airmattress myself so will not put even my short-term guests through that unless they are under the age of 20. I'd love a really comfortable daybed that converts to a queen or king. Murphy beds do work but are the most expensive option and you never get your money back out of them so I'm trying to come up with an alternate option

There are taller inflatable mattresses, and we put a memory foam topper on top of it, and it's very comfortable. Some of them have the inflator system inside the bed, so it's self contained.

I appreciate all the suggestions for murphy beds -- I may have to resort to that option but was hoping for some alternative such as a recommendation for a super comfy sofa bed or a pop up trundle in an Xl twin size. I love the dual xl king beds in European hotels that can be brought together to form a king bed but I don't find those around here and also not sure how I would lay them out in an office without it still looking like 2 twin xl beds

Daybed is your only other option. Ikea has one that converts to a king. Anything else would require you to store a mattress.
Personally I think murphy beds are great and the cabinet ones would look great in an office.

After sleeping on extremely uncomfortable pull out beds at my in-law's we suggested they buy an L shaped sofa like one we had purchased at Macy's. It is an oversized 41" deep sofa with down wrapped cushions and it has worked great for sleeping on for week long visits. The brand is called McCreary Modern. Macy's has a few versions, their prices are more reasonable than the furniture company Room and Board which has several models.

This one at Macy's is called Zaniel and is 89"w x 42"d x 31" h

This one is Gympsom at Macy's 94"w x 43"d 26"h (36"w/cushion). A salesperson could direct you to their McCreary Modern sectionals if you need space for two people. A twin sized bed is 38" deep so there is plenty of room for an adult and cushions fit x-long sheet sets which is helpful. It's unconventional but seriously works great, very comfortable and no more deflating mattress's, springs piercing the body, and no more sore backs! Room and Board also has nicer pull out bed sofa's that have newer technology as well.

My niece had this Ikea combination in her bedroom and found it very comfortable.

Check out "American Leather" sleeper sofas, they have lots of options in fabric, not just leather.

We installed a Murphy bed and it was a LOT of work. I wish we would have just bought a sleeper sofa or futon!

I did in fact purchase and American Leather sofa. The first one came flawed but they corrected it. Guests have not complained about the comfort although it is definitely a firmer mattress than I would have thought but the couch cushions a little too soft for my comfort -- but no sagging at any rate. Fortunately we don't sit on it often and it works in my studio for when I'm seeing clients -- they can sit there if they want to but mostly it just looks decorative in the room and when my guests are staying it works well as a bed.
