I like Tart with a Heart, seems name appropriate. That they were both able to open on a day like today makes them stars!

Both are lovely, but I have had my eye on Tart with a Heart for some time now. It's my kind of dayliliy. It's always a gamble in our climate to plant ones from the Salters, although I love many that they do. We took a gamble on several last year and all came through the winter fine.

Hoosier Nan - You and I do love the red-eyed ones! What Salters did you add? I also added Cold Copper (seems like one you and Bob would like), Sensational Heart, Boundary Born, Ghost Gifts, Shadows of Twilight, Debutante Tradition and Moon Shimmers.

Nancy - I'm happy with anything that can open with temps like these. Did you get the rain? We got about and inch and a half, so that made me happy. It's going to be a little cooler than I would like these next few days.

We added several older ones from the Salters. I don't know if you have noticed but several of the Salters have a slight picotee edge on the sepals. We first noticed it on Stellar Stitchery which has this edge with cream teeth on the outside.

We noticed that several other Salters have this same edge (most lack the teeth though.) So we bought Midnight Potions, Shipwreck Cove, Black Rock Spire, To Be or Not to Be, Renaissance Revival and Brave Kemo Sabe. We hoping to bring that edge out in future generations. Unfortunately, Renaissance Revival didn't make it even in the greenhouse.

The problem is that I like to cross southern plants with northern hardy ones and this trait is hard to find. We did find it in a daylily from Mike Georges from Canada, but he is sold out. We found the trait in daylilies from a grower in Ohio and we tried to contact him but never got a response. (He doesn't have a website to order from.) My only choice to to cross them to each other or cross them to seedlings from Cherry Pie a la Mode X Stellar Stitchery which have some edge but not the teeth. I will also cross with other desirable eyed daylilies and hope the edge shows up. It's tough working with the Salters because they don't usually publish parentages so you don't know how inbred the lines are (But I suspect these are all related.)

Hoosier Nan - I did not know Stellar Stitchery had the edge and teeth on the sepals. I suspect Tart With A Heart and SS are related though. I bought Shipwreck Cove several years ago and never saw it bloom, since it died in a pot. I do think it's an exceptional cultivar. It's too bad about Renaissance Revival. I hope the rest of your Salters make it. Most of the ones I bought were evergreens, so I don't know if they'll make it here. I'm out of protected places to plant them. I'm going to have to save the pollen from Tart to put on my two Abilene Lillian x Ruby Lipstick kids since it is blooming so much earlier than they will. Many years ago Jeff Salter gave a program at the Middle Tennessee Daylily Society, and he said most all his eyed and edged cultivars were descended from Moonlit Masquerade.

I do like those white with red eye/edge looks so I really like Tart with a Heart. Your planned crosses sound very promising!!

I also like the white with the red edge on Tart With A Heart. So pretty and Lightning Round is doing very good for you.

Debra, we got about .3" of rain. not what they predicted, but I will take it. Maybe the next round coming this week will hit. It drizzled all day, seemed like it should have been more. Today, Shark infested Water bloomed, looked good to be so cool and misty, a little splotchy, but pretty good.

Both lovely, but Tart With a Heart is a beauty for sure. Lightening Round is quite pretty. I am sorry about the rain and we are supposed to have some this week. It has been very dry around here until this last couple of days.

Kay - I hope you will get some rain this week. We got more than an inch this past week, so I was happy. We had been very dry for several weeks.

OMG Debra . I love Tart with a Heart ! !!!!!! How very striking it is! I bet a clump just screams at you from across the garden . What I like most other than the color combo is that there is no muddling or bleeding of the red into the cream . It really is just lovely. Lightening round is a pretty one but so very similar to many others that are out there.( which in a of itself is lucky as that means anyone anywhere can find a cultivar similar to it and can grow their own in whatever zone you may be in .

Heather - I would love to see a whole clump of Tart With A Heart. It's only a single fan now, and an evergreen, so I hope it will survive here. The red color is much brighter than I expected, since it's registered as raspberry red.

I agree with everyone here, that’s a lovely Salter daylily. I will enjoy what I see here, no Salters in my gardens. Lightning Round looks great today. The weather has been chilly here, we got some much needed rain so I can’t complain too much.

The form on that Lightening Round is so good every time that I really enjoy seeing it. Maybe it will fade to more white when the sun heats up? I like it mucho........Maryl

Maryl - Lightniing Round did bleach out to more of a white on the two days we had last week in the 90s. The form, size and the fact that it blooms extra early are assets. It hasn't had a bad opening yet. I bought it because it's supposed to be a good pod setter.
