Your kids won't be toddlers forever and if the basement will include a play space and/or other games like pool or ping pong, having a small beverage fridge will save a lot of tromping up and down stairs when your kids and their friends are older.

I’d say go for it. Since the area is so small I don’t think the off-symmetry would be an issue at all. Stock with water and even some snacks for the littles. I think that’d come in handy if you’ll be spending a lot of time there. Enjoy!

We have one, and it is good for drink storage for the kids when they get a little older.

How do you plan to use your bar area? Ours are mostly used for coffee/tea, water, soft drinks and refrigerating snacks like carrots and hummus.

We have one wet bar with a mini fridge and another without. I often dream about how I can fit one into the one without, that's how handy they are.

When I'm playing with our young grandkids in the playroom upstairs and can't leave them unsupervised to get someone a cold drink, or for our overnight guests who want a drink or snack in the middle of the night, it's great to have the mini-fridge nearby. Being able to refrigerate cream for coffee is pretty awesome too.

I have always had a mini fridge but I am addicted to Diet Coke. It also comes in handy at Thanksgiving when I need somewhere to defrost the turkey. I agree with the advice that kids don't stay little forever!

@wynterwynd - lol! That's for sure. I'm trying to decide whether to get a mini fridge to go in the garage (next to the extra freezer that's already down there) just to store all the ferments I keep making. Maybe a wine fridge too?

Only you can answer how you would use the space, and what would be the most useful for you and your family. Personally, I would want the closed storage instead on the entire wall - for games, toys, etc. Do you even need a sink there? Do you want to be washing dishes in two areas? How far away is your kitchen?

Wire it for a fridge but put removable shelves in so you can change your mind later.

We just bought a Marvel panel ready drink fridge for our bar area (in our dining room) and are having a full panel put on to cover the glass. Solves the symmetry issue and makes it much more cohesive and prettier. Best of both worlds.

Why are you putting in a bar? With no sodas and no alcoholic beverages, are you planning to fix snacks? If so, consider putting in an 18" dishwasher to match the fridge. No one likes bringing dishes up the stairs from the basement.

Kids grow. fast. do you really want them and their friends traipsing up into the kitchen for drinks, juice, milk, whatever? put a mini fridge down there. Or like someone said, wired it for one and do some type of shelving now. you can always stick one in there later.

We finished our basement as my boys were entering their teens, and actually ended up with a full size refrig down there, in the kitchenette area. Never ever regretted it. (And we already had a spare refrig! Teen boys can EAT!)

We used the mini-fridge in our basement rec room when our son was in his teens and having friends over, and then later when he was in college and we had to quarantine him in the basement when he came home during the pandemic. Maybe you could build the cabinet with a door that covers a small fridge inside so it looks symmetrical on the outside.

We have had a mini fridge in basement for years. It gets used for all the reasons others have stated. We used to have an 18’ dishwasher there too, thinking for party glass wear, not to have to lug upstairs, but it rarely got used. So when we had to replace due to a basement flood, we got replacement bar fridge plus a wine cooler instead of dishwasher.

Add the fridge and get the matching door for design reasons. Like someone said, you can never have too many refrigerators!

IMO no need for a panel ready fridge but I would for sure do one , now for drinking boxes and later for other drinks as the kids age. As for symmetry IMO that is usually over rated first comes function.

Yesssss! I’d also put in a mini microwave over the sink.

A minifridge in the basement is also a life-saver when the main one goes out.

We also use ours when hosting a big group-huge salads and extra beverages can strain our usual one. The thanksgiving turkey also defrosts there.

Yes to fridge! This is not the best picture, but our space is in the kitchen and a little over 5 feet long. There was a little fridge there when we bought the house - which has since bit the dust. I always thought we would fill that space with matching cabinetry, but the fridge turned out to be sooo handy we replaced with a new one a few years ago. Great for water, soft drinks, and in our situation, cream for our coffee.
