Here's the flatbed. It's almost totally full. The medium size yellow hostas sprinkled about are Dancing Queen.

That yellow small-leaf plant is golden marjoram. It grows fast, spreads, and comes back every year. Dianthus is beginning to bloom. Intoxicating fragrance. Reverting undulata behind.

I planted the big hosta bed out back with "waves" of massed hostas. That's a Japanese Magnolia, pruned hard every season to keep its small size and umbrella shape. I keep it small enough to reach its top with my small ladder.

Blooming rhodie at back, August Moons around it, irises clumped by color, Sum and Substance trying to reach its potential, Landifolia, Japanese forest grass hakonechloa, NOID large greens at back. Blue Cadet down center. variegated ajuga and yellow creeping jenny below.

There are trees in the hosta bed.

This bed really needs edging. The creeping jenny is escaping.

My big rhodie does this. I love it.

There it is down below. Lancifolia framing the eddge of the driveway, along with a Plantagenia cousin that blooms late and fragrantly. Sun Power in foreground.

Nope, no helpers. I'd LOVE a gaggle of gardeners. Then maybe I could keep on top of things. I need to win the lottery.

Beautiful gardens At one time I would of loved it for my yard, sorry but now all i see with that amount of shade areas are ticks. Ticks are a big problem here.

Those are some meticulously maintained beds. You have an impressive hosta collection in a very nice setting. Well done.

There are ticks in the woods. Shade and woods provide homes for rodents and they carry ticks. As do the deer. And the rabbits and chipmunks and squirrels and voles and....

and ...... they hang out on vegetation waiting for anything red blooded to snack on . lol

Teeda, actually I don't go to work. So I don't come home every day. I'm here working in this garden and enjoying it as I work. If I had a job or kids in the house I couldn't do it. It's too much.

Yes, nicholsworth, wave plantins look great. I'm now working on putting in specimen plantings in their midst. I love designing.

I spend more time these days attempting to minimize deer damage, though, since the garden is prettymuch "done." And I have a rabbit now. Oh no!!

Oh wait, I'm putting in a fern garden now, in deep shade. That lets me indulge in my love of garden design. Waves of ferns require digging them up in the woods and transplanting them, then enduring a full season of limp and weak shocked ferns before they come up vibrant and eager the next season. Delayed gratification is the norm.

How much shade do those hydrangeas grow in? I am looking for a hydrangea that might bloom in deep, deep shade. I might end up having to use oak leaf hydrangeas.

nicholsworth, are those Annabelles? My shade is deep and dark. BIrches and oaks form a solid canopy overhead. Do yours live in that kind of darkness?

I can't say if your shade is deeper than mine..but I have more shade than anyone I know that doesn't live in my neighborhood..
