Ya I would be more focused on FUNCTION than 'modern'. "Modern" changes long before your kitchen has another redesign. FUNCTION is FOREVER.

15-18 inches up from counter is standard height for bottom of those uppers. Why exactly are you increasing that to 22inches. If you have the brand and model I'd refer to guidelines from the hood maker. for the most part above the range cabinet would be a little shorter but if they are making hoods super thin like yours [1.5 inch?] the 18 in up from counter may allow for hood along with cabinet with no extra adjustments. A modern look might be created with hardware and style of backsplash tile etc ......rather than more inches of backsplash. Do you have some technical guidelines you have been working with????

Functionally, since you are 5’4”, I suggest you keep to the standard height of upper cabinets to start 18 inches from the counter. I am 5’ 7” and my Shaker upper cabinets are standard 18” from the counter and work well for my height. I agree if you want a modern look: choose simple hardware and simple accessories for your kitchen countertops.

Maybe you should have focused on drawers.

I think that 22" would be too high. I am tall (5.9) and my cabinet bottoms are going to be 19" from the countertop height. Had them that way in my previous home. I like a little space under the cabinets so that I can raise my Keurig coffee maker handle without scraping my knuckles or having to pull it out from under the cabinets bottoms, among other reasons.

The cabinet maker I am going to use, likes to leave 20" between top of counter and base of cabinet box, specially if you are going to add any trim. With the 20" you can fit small appliances underneath easily, after any trim. I like the look of having a bit more backsplash.

Personally, wish I did 15", would rather store small appliances IN cabinets than ON counters.

Think about your future buyers, if there are any chance that shorter subgroups will be the future potential owner of your home-- go with standard height. No need to eliminate future buyers keeping up with trends.

The last house we bought was built by tall people, the wife was the shortest at 5'11" and one kid was 6'11" ... yes, all the kids played basketball! We are on the short/normal side and never minded some of the things they had placed at slightly taller height, some we really liked and plan on using in our own project.

If your only storage is uppers, then having cabinets a few inches higher might be an issue for a very short person, but if most of your storage is in drawers and a separate pantry, having upper cabinet at 18" - 22" will make no difference, except to the looks of the kitchen.

Contemporary ( modern) espically European style cabinets tend to have more than the US standard 18” off the countertop. This is one we did like that which also gives space for the prep sink.
