Marci, first figure out if this "problem" is because the cabinets are not the size you ordered or not dropped down enough when installed. The 4" molding limits the distance the installers could drop them down so it may not be your family installers. If the cabinets are too short, then you need to look at whether you approved them. Surely you can call the family installer to first get his/her perspective. If the cabinets are not the ones you ordered (which includes size), then go back to the contractor to correct his/her mistake. Now you can understand why your contractor was reluctant to use an unknown subcontractor, especially one two state away.

My husband and I are both tall. We raised the counter height, and with cabinets all the way to the ceiling there are shelves even

we can't reach. I highly recommend an inexpensive IKEA BEKVÄM step stool - very sturdy and no folding needed.

@93cc The contractor measured and provided measurements, but I never saw them. They gave them directly to the cabinet company. Now I’m wishing I knew to ask for more details. If I could have had 3 inches added to the size, I would have been able to have a better height on that 4th shelf. I do like the way they look though. The border at the top wasn’t what I would have picked, but looks better than what I would have. And although they sit a little high for my reach, they look nice where they are. You wouldn’t look at them and wonder why they are so far up.
