Got back to start. You have more than twice as many lights required for this space.

Is it too late to change any cabinets and the island? Is there a skylight through an upper floor? Can you make the section larger?

yes too many,

and vaulted vs. standard isn't a problem for pendants, just get ones with sloping base, same with recessed. straight and for sloping. eyeballs are great for feature walls like artwork or highlighting architecture.

Think about furniture placement. What do you need light for?

When will you light up the whole room, and when do you want specific lights on.

Yes, it is a lot to think about.

Ha! I tend to want a few more recessed lights than the average user, but this is way too much! I would suggest that you go to a lighting store and see if they have a lighting specialist, not just a sales person. Offer to pay for their time if you aren't going to buy product from them.

Also note, that all recessed light aren't the same. There are mid-grade options that are much better quality (lighting wise) than those sold at big box stores.

Was doing research for a project recently and the electrician produced technology from 10 years ago for the recessed light he planned to install. No way! There are much better products out there now, but they aren't found in the warehouse of the local lighting supply store that caters to builders.

Thanks everyone, will scale down the number of lights then!

@3onthetree - no it's not too late to change cabinets and island. It's single storey so the skylights are external. We cannot change the size of the total area but can play around with what we use each section for (dining, sitting etc)
