Kitchen and Pantry layout help

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi! I am designing a custom build home, and would like advice on the kitchen and pantry layout. See current version of the floor plan below. I'm going back and forth with the number of sinks, and how I will work efficiently in the pantry. I'm used to cooking in close proximity to a sink, but still wanted the kitchen window main sink, hence the island sink. For the pantry, in addition to dry goods,

I'm envisioning housing most countertop appliances there, toaster oven, kettle, microwave, blender, coffee machine, etc, so I thought it would be convenient to also have a sink there. Part of me also finds this excessive, and maybe the pantry is too large(?). I don't think I want a second refrigerator in the pantry because it may be visually bulky. Would love advice on the pantry layout. No interest in using it as a bar and we aren't fancy dish display people. Would like it to be both beautiful, practical, and functional. I asked for the exterior door to have access to the large side yard/garden. I've also considered pulling the pantry in 5 ft, having a window and base cabinets instead of door and instead having the exterior door from the sun room to a small covered side porch.

I would have the exterior door off the sunroom. You could do them as french doors to keep all the light/views. I think a sink in the pantry is a great idea. You can fill the coffee maker, clean spills, etc more easily than running into the kitchen. And the idea of a pantry, for me, is all the extra storage. I am like you: I want my appliances in there and the extra storage would be wonderful.

Keep the prep sink in the island. Make sure it's at least 18", and make sure you have at least 3 feet (more is better) between the sink and the edge nearest the fridge. Do not get rid of that sink. If you do, you will be waking all over your kitchen. Ask me how I know (and my kitchen was smaller).
I'm meh on the pantry sink. And definitely not a fan of a door from the pantry to the back yard. That space should be on the interior with no windows of it will be used for food storage. If you want the door there, make it a back mud room of sorts and put the pantry somewhere else.

If this is in the design phase for a new construction house, I would step back from detailing appliance storage and think bigger picture about the overall layout. The Sitting/Office is accessed through the Kitchen past the cleanup, with no outside access. The noisy cooking line is directly visible from down the bedroom corridor. The island seats are segregated because they are on the other side of the beam sitting in the Living or Dining room.

The kitchen is too spread out. You'll need a scooter to travel between different areas while cooking.

I have a pantry with a full fridge. I also have refrigerator drawers in the main kitchen. In my opnion the reason to do a two part kitchen is to give the main kitchen a custom and unique look. But the relationships have to be correct for it to be both attractive and functional. What's your goal?

If you do a lot of food gardening, keep that exterior door on the pantry. Nicer to haul produce right into the pantry and to the sink. Is that square in the upper left corner of the pantry another fridge or freezer? I hope so, that's very nice. I don't think the space too big for the pantry, a chef likes to have space for a lot of ingredients and other kitchen stuff.

Really appreciate everyone's advice! I feel like I've been designing in a vacuum somewhat as our architect contracts with the builder and is more of a draftsman role than full service/design advice. Yes, I agree about moving the door to the sun room, thanks @S G! @3onthetree the sunroom/office will be my work from home office and yoga space that overlooks a garden. I cook all the time so I see this space as my "wing" of the home. My husband's home office is through french doors off the family room, and looks out to the front porch. The corridor to the right is a spare bedroom then onto mud bench and garage, where our early rising parents can be close to the coffee/pantry :) The other 3 bedrooms are on the opposite side of the house. @Don really nice place! Yes, I want an large open kitchen with multiple work zones because I cook every day, and we often have multi-night guests over the holidays cooking with me. My 9 year old daughter is really getting into cooking as well. Below is my vision for the stove wall. sunroom doors on left, pantry doors on right. Drawn as 18x96 french swing doors but may make them pocket doors.

If you keep your prep sink, your kitchen is not too spread out. The distances between your work spaces will be fine.

Regarding doors - I would use double acting swing if you can swing it (ha). Pocket is fine, but you won't be shutting them unless you consciously do it (plus, pockets shouldn't be used for doors that need to open and close often). Our pantry door is open all the time. I would love double acting swing doors on mine. Yours is big enough for it.

I've thought about the swing doors for the pantry (grew up watching the Cosby show and they were always in and out of the kitchen swing doors, ha). For the office/sunroom, I want to be able to lock the door when I'm on conf calls, so pocket or single swing.

Yes, sorry, I meant double acting swing for the pantry.

If not a second refrigerator in the pantry, how about a narrow freezer? I love having two refrigerator/freezers...one in the kitchen, one in the pantry...especially when cooking or prepping for company.

@beesneeds yes, I will have a food forest out there. My original thought was exactly for that purpose, however, the reality of the dogs and kid traffic through there is less desirable. If the door is out the sunroom, I can still wash the food in the main window sink.

@felizlady yes, my husband was suggesting a smaller beverage refrigerator in the pantry and perhaps a deep meat freezer in the adjacent storage room or garage. My issue with the larger refrigerator is the bulky sight line with in located at the rear. If I move it to the left wall next to the double door, it won't be visible through the glass.

I would move the prep sink to the end of the island. In the middle cuts the long space for when you’re putting out platters/entertaining.

A main sink and a sink in the island should be enough. I just saw this.
