Need help to finish the master bedroom
Long story short, we purchased this new home in 2018, straight after moving from Europe. We had to get furniture at that time (bed, nightstands) quite in a rush.
Today, we are having all the carpets replaced with wooden floor (vinyl, actually). and I want to use this as an opportunity to redo the master in a nicer way, I find it quite plain looking.
The lighting of the room is quite low, as you can see in the picture. The room is somewhere around 18 x 20 ft, ceiling is 10ft
The flooring will be light (Floor2000- Addiction 912)
I am thinking about painting the wall at the back with a light blue
The bed (which is just a hadboard) will go.
The 2 nightstands are Hooker Furniture Corsica chest 3 drawers
The bench is hooker too, dark wood and beige fabric
Opposite to the foot of the bed, have a long console (Beaumont from Hooker, again!) which is dark wood and a bit of light blue
I kind of like dark furniture in a bedroom because it makes me feel secure (I really don’t know from where I got that!), anyway, I am thinking about getting a dark bed, maybe 4 posters, not too heavy in term of style (maybe like the Farmhouse king bed from Pottery & Barn, I have other options too, pictures are below, I would like something high).
Do you think it will be too much of dark furniture in the room, and too heavy? Especially with the light flooring?
(I would be ready to let go of the dark color furniture but I am worried I will never get a decent price for the 2 chests, so I feel kind of stuck with them and I have no other room that can accommodate them nicely…)
Also, I feel unable to mix the bedding pattern/color/structure so I always end up in plain colors! (here is RL chambray bedding, comfy but plain), what is the secret?
How would you make the dark color furniture scheme work in a light environnement ?
Shall I get taller mirrors? What kind of rug?
Any input - at any level - will be highly appreciated..

5 years agoThe dark furniture will be fine with light floors and light colored walls. Any of beds can work with a 10 foot ceiling, but I'd stick to wood, or cream/tan upholstery so it works with your floors. Gray with the dark furniture will look cold and heavy. Beiges and light blues will look very restful.

PRO5 years agoI love the furnishings you have assembled. They just need to be tweaked in the room. I'm kind of stunned that you mounted the mirrors horizontally instead of vertically in this room. That should be changed first.
I think soothing gray walls and touches of antique bronze would work nicely.

Yes everdebz, the chests have dark pewter/black round handles.
I am not specificaly madly in love with poster beds but the room is quite big and I am looking for a little bit of substance so I thought a poster bed would sit nicely.
Berverly is right about the mirror, I hung them horizontaly because the chest are so wide (4 ft I guess) that they did not work vertical. I need taller mirrors..
Also, I am not attached to one specific style (as farmhouse), I mentioned that because the bed I saw at Pottery Barn is named like that, and compared to the poster bed from Hooker (Miramar), it looks less heavy. I attach a pic
The whole house is very cool powdery tones, hence copper will not work, I need to stay with cool tones.
5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI suggest you do a lot of measuring and keep a pocket notebook of your measurements with you when you shop. The bedside chests should reach the top of the mattress. You might be able to add legs or feet to them if they're too short. Your lamps are too skinny for the mass of the chests below. Look for chunky lamps that can hold their own with the chests. The lamps and chests together should measure 58-64" from the floor. What is the purpose of the mirrors; are they reflecting a view, something beautiful or interesting? Or is the lighting bad and you're trying to pull some of it across the room? I prefer tall skinny ones that are more narrow than the chests, hung 5" above them. Here is a guide for sizing a rug. Since you're intimidated by the prospect of selecting bedding, bear in mind that you are creating a pretty neutral room, so bedding can add the zing it needs. I've found some high end king stuff at Tuesday Morning if you have one near you. Very reasonable prices and not one of a thousand others just like it on the shelf.

It is 84 inches high, I find it interesting... It comes in dark grey, light grey and sand/cream..
decoenthusiaste yes, today the chest are at the top of the mattress level, and I agree, the lamps are visually skinny, even if the base is made of glass and is quite large.The mirrors are here to bring some light. They look really small on the pic; they are 4 x 3 ft... but I agree, I have to replace them for much taller ones, especially if I go with a tall headboard.
As for the rug, I too like to have one big rug under the bed but I will need to check how I can do that. I have a 9 x 12 Bakhtiari rug that I will need to put somewhere (we have two large dogs so living room is not an option) but considering the size of the chests I guess it might not cover enough space - chest are 4ft wide, so 4 x2 + 6 = 14 ft with the bed + gap between bed and chests, I am short of 1 1/2 ft each side :(
everdebz, I agree metal could be nice, I like the idea that it is not heavy looking. the downside is that it brings a sense of coldness. But I will do some researches.The fireplace has been a topic indeed, this winter I installed a linear fireplace in the living room, it looks amazing (even if I still have a bit of painting to do around it), so I was thinking that I could redo that in the bedroom but I have a very long console against the wall so my options are out - and we live in Florida anyway ;)
Florida is also a reason why the blue tones are working quite well (and blues are part of my colors)
As for wallpaper, I the walls have a kind of texture:

I am on west coast florida, 1h north of Tampa. So I would say more coastal, but I do not live by the sea.
I am looking for something in line with the living room, simple but chic but not too much, pure with some refined touches. I took a video this AM, the light is not good, but it gives an idea of the general feel in the house.
The console is in pic too (light is horrible, too).
Right now, I am thinking about a tall bed, I am hesitating between light grey and cream...
