It does look identical to bag worms I had on a Bald Cypress and a juniper at my former house.

The only bagworms I've seen look like this stock photo and there are some of these on the same tree. The size of the one in main photo is about 8 times larger. Is this common? Is this the kind that should be removed and destroyed?

Gall on douglas fir. And Fir needles encasing a gall.

Dougs do not get galls that look like that. That is a bagworm casing regardless of the size. And yes, it need to be removed and as many others that you can find and reach.
