Miele W1 - Pls Advise for TwinDos Dosage

last modified: 4 years ago

I want to adjust my Miele W1 TwinDos dispensing dosage for my water hardness, but I am confused at what settings would be correct. I understand I might have to do some trial and error for the settings, but if anyone could advise what quantity levels might be good to start, that would be appreciated.

I've tested my water hardness and it is 9 grains per gallon (gpg), which is right in the middle of the "hard" category (hard is between 7 and 11 gpg). I am getting too much suds with the Miele pre-set TwinDos amounts, so for the time being I've gone back to Tide Free liquid. My clothes do not have residual detergent from the Tide Free liquid in case anyone thought that might be the issue. I really want to take advantage of the W1's TwinDos system. I am using the UltraPhase Sensitive formula if that makes a difference. What quantity levels would you recommend for Phase 1 and Phase 2? TIA.

I have an 060 without TwinDos. If I had that machine I would have it set to the lowest dose of detergent and act like I had soft water. The water hardness factored into the dose I feel is an incorrect method to determine amount of detergent. The Miele W1's are compact, small drums. I would suggest using the water plus setting at third droplet setting to aid in a good water level. Allergen setting will also gain you an extra rinse on most cycles, and another rinse if extra rinse is used. Do not use max fill for rinses, it is not necessary.

@RoyHobbs Your experience is one reason I didn't want a machine with TwinDos, although you can disable the feature. I like the Miele powder detergents and dose them differently by load type. The Miele powder detergents are amazing at stain removal and very low suds.

i have mine set at 40 ml (1) and 30 ml (2). seems to work fine

    some thoughts

9 is not that hard for water 6 is the lowest to look for . anything lower is "too" soft and makes it difficult to rinse out detergent

how do you know that there isnt any residual detergent in the tide washed clothes? Run them without any detergent in the Miele and see what happens

I've been using the Sensitive version. I keep the dosage at 48/27 as recommended but default the soil level to light. By doing this the machine reduces the amount by 30%.

Best way to determine proper dosage for phase 1 is to buy yourself 5-6 brand new towels. Do a rinse and spin and make sure there are no suds. Then start at the lowest dose in the manual. make sure it rinses clean, if it does then up the dose 5 ml. repeat until it doesnt rinse clean. Then back off 5ml.

Phase 2 is oxygen bleach mostly, a binder to prevent mineral redeposit and an optical brightener. it doesnt really cause suds. I would suggest using the dose that is in the manual based on your water hardness. Destaining is oxygen bleaches job. There needs to be enough in the wash liquor mix for it to work properly.
