There’s a lot going on there. No actual focal point. Fireplace, TV, large wood decor item, multiple trinkets. It’s visually busy. Maybe start with less items to determine your focus. The rest of your home is lovely.

Please show your entire room on all four sides. Often different layout, TV placement, etc. can help solve a clutter problem. If you want a clean farmhouse look, then almost everything on the mantel, above it, and around it will need to be relocated. First, more photos.

Your staircase would be more in the farmhouse style with a different kind of runner--handwoven look. Again, without seeing your entire space, it's impossible to help you move in the direction you say you want to go.

I assume you never use the fireplace, because it seem that the TV is too close to it.

I agree with taking away everything around, on, and above F/P. Add some extra grout to make F/P look more rustic then paint it white. I would cover top two rows of brick with faux mantle.

This room has so much potential! For the classic, fresh farmhouse look I would do the following; paint the existing brick white, spray paint the metal on the fireplace black with heat resistant paint, add a wooden mantle to add a bit of warmth and protect your tv from melting and lastly take shiplap up to your ceiling to accentuate the height of your space. You want to conceal any mechanical elements if possible. I would change your speakers to lower-profile ones or a bar that could be inset in the new shiplap and covered with a grille.

Try painting the fireplace....a color to match the wall (even smooth out the surface a with plaster before painting...to make it more architectural..if you like this then you could install a pretty ...thin stone or tile ...on the hearth to add a little extra decorative feature

Thank you for the extra photos--very helpful. I don't know that you necessarily have to paint the fireplace white, but the room would look far cleaner and brighter if the walls were painted white, as many farmhouse style rooms are. Save the fireplace for last to see how it looks in a white space--might have a nice rustic feel to it .

Think about getting a patterned rug in off white with small amount of brown and gray and some gold and blue to harmonize with the curtain and your nice blue chair. This palette would work well in your room.

Again, remove all decor items. They just visually clutter what could be an airier room if you paint it white. Sure, add a rustic basket of logs on the hearth for interest and some in the firebox. Also pull the far end of the sofa forward about a foot to let the curtains hang properly and give the room a sense of flow.

I would move the TV to where the teal two seater is and move that to the stair wall. The TV can be on a swivel arm.

Paint the fireplace white as others have suggested. Paint the walls a light tan, a color close to the rug color, but a bit lighter.

Move the sectional out from the wall a few inches so it is not crushing the draperies.

Cause you mention light colors: would curtain rod be ok if chalk paint, etc. in antique/ soft white or linen color?

Do curtains have sheen, dressy?

Nice room! I think painting walls and F/P white would look good. Like your curtains, think they would look better against white walls. Agree with moving TV - maybe in the corner next to stairs on corner console. Kids are so cute!!!
