Electric Water Heater "Smart" Timer

I live alone and have a newer electric tank type water heater and I'm thinking (maybe incorrectly) that I could save a few dollars by not having 40 gallons of hot water available when I'm not home. Unfortunately my work schedule can be very irregular (different start time, long shifts, days/nights, some weekends) so a simple mechanical timer wouldn't work. Other than remembering to flip a breaker on/off I'm thinking of a "smart" timer...

Anyone use one? Like/dislike? I guess, not being very smart myself, that it should be able to recognize when I'm home or not. Maybe recognize (from my phone???) what time the alarm is set for???

No, a on-demand type water heater isn't an option. No natural gas and the current electric service is much too small.
