You are right way too busy

All of the comments made so late in the thread about the initial tile choice are just indicative of today's society where people can't be bothered to put in the time to read and follow a conversation w/o interrupting...
While the train of thought was not always clear--what was clear was the the OP made an immediate choice to stop that horrible tile choice. So anyone responding as those that choice still needed to be prevented is like the waitress who interrupts your flow of conversation at dinner to ask some innate question...you just want to say "leave us alone to our discussion..."

Congratulations on the finished product. It looks beautiful.

Like so many design issues, your question comes down to a matter of taste. Your taste, your husband's and everyone else's are different. The choice of materials in the photo delivers three design characteristics that may appeal to some people and not others. 1. There is a large assortment of colors from the wood to the hues in the granite to the many colors of the tile 2. There is very high contrast in the colors and 3. the size of color elements is very small. Collectively, these aspects of the design create a feeling that any observer may or may not feel comfortable with.

I've attached a photo of a similar kitchen that has a smaller number of variations in color and contrast but still with a fine grained color pattern scheme. Try the "optometrist test" with this picture and yours to see which you and your husband prefer. That will give you a sense of how much the color palate and contrast aspects of your design impact your feelings.

Similar comparison could be made between your picture and others that use larger tiles (perhaps of a single color such as white, stainless or an earth hue) rather than the matchstick that you have chosen. The larger tiles are less busy and the single color reduces the contrast and energy that your picture contains.

Again, it's a matter of taste. If you like salad and your husband likes Chinese, maybe you can compromise on Italian. :-)

Don't know if we want you to change the title. This is very entertaining. Not only busy but can't be bothered to sit down and smell the roses!

Without going into details, lets just say we just had a similar experience. We ended up with a more subtle backsplash. Was the best idea! Therefore when entering the room, the beautiful counters stood out. It is beautiful and we are very glad we did it! Otherwise it is all too busy and your eye just wonders and you see nothing.

Under cabinet lights would look great. Should be done before the backsplash is completed. Can purchase at home depot.

I agree with the rest. These tiles are busy and clash with the granite counter tops. Neutral simple tiles that picks up the colors of the counter top will beautiful. You want your whole kitchen to have harmony. Right now these tiles compete with the counters.

Hi Ginny, Don't be too hasty, I like it! I would add some accessories for the counter top that have more of the granite color. It's not what everyone else has but to me that's a good thing!

Love the horses. Great choice! And I also love the way you framed it.

For what it's worth the backsplash is too busy! Your countertops are basically same colors as mine and so are your cabinets. I've been debating what kind of backsplash to use and thus is what I've chosen! I have nickel hardware also. If I don't go with this I'm going with the copper panels you get at lowes but this pic is my first choice .

LOL! Lori-great job with everything. You are very patient to deal with all the crazy "help" you are still receiving. You should also give your husband a nice dinner in that lovely kitchen now. He is very patient to have dealt with all the decision making. LOVE the focal point of the horse tile picture. Enjoy!

OK so while I enjoy this thread and won't leave til its closed....our help is needed elsewhere. The discussion is called "Need serious help with this crazy fabric in our new house". I think this is the link http://houzz.com/discussions/616965. Its a living room with a hideous fabric on the walls, windows and even the sofa! The room could give you seizures. Well it started off with everyone giving suggestions on how to get rid of it. Now a couple of pros have convinced her its beautiful. Help her !!! A little of this fabric would be pretty....a lot of it hurts my eyes. Anyone in?

Holly- are you telling me that country kitchen is in the same house as the Chinese fabric covered walls, windows and sofa?!? Is there a design ER on houzz. I can't wait to see how that ends....wonder what the
decorators who love the fabric are gunna say about the kitchen. This woman has her work cut out for her.

Ginny-yes the yellow retro kitchen is in the same house. The link I posted is from the same poster as this thread and somewhere she mentions that. It is also mentioned that she should try to tie together both designs. I agree that will be a challenge both decorating and money wise.

Glad to see you used the neutral stone tile! AND thrilled that you used the horse above the stove - I think more than anything that little personal touch that means so much to you completes this project! Congrats.

Sorry your original choice did not work out and ended up being a project in itself. The final project is beautiful and was worth stopping the install and getting what you want. But as to reading every post...this one looks like it might end up being as long as War and Peace...with a plot almost as confusing. :)

Read this thread as I too have Crema Bordeaux granite in a galley kitchen and have no clue what color of tile to put as my walls. 4" backsplash is also granite. My application is quite different [see pic I drew in Paint]. I have to admit.... this thread took me a while to read but was quite entertaining!

Your kitchen turned out BEAUTIFULLY!! Love the copper accent of the horses. I'm wondering what is the name of the tile you selected for your walls. I think it could very well work on my application. Is it travertine or tumbled marble?
