When did you plant out? I plant out at the beginning of March, and we're awash in cherries in May and June. As of now, not getting any more pollination, because of the heat, but many green tomatoes still on the vines.

Dan, I planted this one out as a little guy from Home Depot in May; if I remember correctly it is one of Bonnie's. When I bought it it had 3 babies that have ripened and been eaten. These new ones have come on since the temps were very high - over 100. I thought tomatoes wouldn't set fruit when the temps are that high.

I stopped growing tomatoes because I would get a few, then the plants would sulk all summer and then put out some more fruit in the Fall. Mind you, I'm not complaining, just can't quite figure this out.

I think, though I'm not sure, that what counts is the lowest temperature. So if you get cool nights (<70F) after 100F days, ideally with low humidity, you might get some pollination. They set fruit when it's cool. Not when it's hot. In my climate, summer temps are 95-100F in the daytime and 75-80F at night with high humidity. That's a no go.

I assume you were planting for a fall crop. If you want a spring crop, get them in the ground right after last frost. I'm guessing that might be around the same date as for me -- beginning of March. Around here, tomatoes are a race. The time between last frost and unpollinatable temperatures is about four months. It's all got to happen in those four months.

That might explain it then. Our nights and early mornings have been in the 70s and our air is dry.

I use to put in my tomatoes in February/early March. This year I decided not to bother. But.... there was this nice little cherry tomato plant begging to go home with me, and so it did. I have to admit that it is a treat to find a handful of sun-warmed ripe ones to pop in my mouth right out there in the garden. 😊 YUM!
