Need help with printed sheetrock?

last modified: 5 years ago

Recently bought home with, what seems to be, printed sheetrock. Seams are not joined. It has a light texture to it. All attaching nails show. Visible holes where old nails were used to hang items. Any ideas how to cover? It's quite ugly in rooms with shiney wood cathedral ceilings. Thought about covering with wood but then the entire room would be wood. Have to remove trims and make adjustments. Would replacing with regular product be easier. Or is there something besides a mud-type product that can be overlaid? There are pics later in discussion.

Thank you for your response. We don't have a mobile home. There is a covering over something that's fragile.

Could it be a manufactured home? Built else where then two half's put together on site. I've seen one that was built like that. It was placed on a typical basement foundation and looked like a regular house, was built with regular 2x4 construction in two pieces then installed on foundation.

However, I noticed rather than drywall it was finished with what you would see in a mobile home with seams covered with strips with staples and also some wood paneling. Probably done for both weight of finished product also would be more flexible, (finished drywall would probably not be good during delivery going down the road and crack/seams split)

Could your house be a manufactured home? Is there any drywall in home?

If it really is drywall, are you sure the printed part isnt wallpaper?

This is a split level home. It is not used in all the rooms. It's not a wallpaper. There is a hole, and I can see how thick the outer layer is. The inside is soft. I guess the could have gotten some to do a remodel. It doesn't have those vertical strips like mobile homes do. The edges are curved, and they left them exposed. Thanks for your comments.

The last pic is wall between foyer and kitchen/dining room (open area that is width of house).

There is drywall in the home. It's a mix of this material, drywall, lots of wood, paneling, and concrete. This is utility room.

Can you post some pictures of the wall with the printed stuff, please

What year was the home built? They were doing all sorts of crazy "new ideas" stuff in the 70's so maybe that could explain it... but I really have no idea. Your utility room doesn't look like it's very old.

Is it printed with a design that resembles wallpaper? Growing up, we had a basement bathroom that my dad built using a wallboard printed with a floral design (and I remember going to Menards with my dad when he bought it, this would have been in the late 80s or early 90s). It didn't have joined seams because it would have covered up the design. It was thinner and lighter than drywall. I would rip it out and drywall.

You're probably stuck removing the trim no matter what you replace the walls with; sounds like regular drywall would be your best bet to get a smooth paintable surface that will work with the wooden ceilings. You can get drywall in various thicknesses.
