We had a couple of small bits of water damage on ceilings that we couldn't quite nail down the source and then a week ago we heard some serious dripping noises in one wall and then a few days later some significant water damage on the ceiling and walls in our lower level.

One thing we found was that the water to the humidifier in our attic HVAC closet was running constantly whether thermostat is calling for it to run or not - likely a stuck solenoid. So we turned off the water.

That should not have caused a problem though as the water should have just run down the drain. HOWEVER, we found a couple of problems.

1) The water from the humidifer was coming out of the pipe and pouring across the silicon that sealed the drain to the disaster pan.

2) GC found a small hole in the silicon.

SO, we think we found the problem.

I was surprised that they used silicon to seal this like they did. Is this the best way to do a disaster pan to drain pipe connection? Is there a better way?
