How to best decorate with a brick wall.

last modified: 4 years ago

We just moved and I'm just not sure how to decorate our family room. It has a beautiful exposed brick wall. Not sure if my furniture is working with the new room. Feels very brown - what can I do to give it a colour pop? Carpet? I just put the sign on the wall but don't plan on keeping it there. Desperately needing advice. Thanks in advance!

No word art ever IMO Why not look for a larg piece of art with colors you like then add some pillows in those colors and a rug maybe more texture and less pattern even a shag could work

Definitely a rug. And maybe slipcovers over your sofas will lighten the space a bit. I think the style of slipcovers would be pretty too :)

As mentioned, large art over sofa and area rug.

I like your sofa color. Make sure you art has a light colored background. You area rug should have a light colored background also or a light colored shag would work also.

Replace you lamp on the end table to a larger one.

Then repost for adjustments. Keep receipts for easy returns.

    What a wonderful space!

I think most of your furniture works. Maybe you can find a better place for the mahogany cart. A larger lamp in the corner of the two sofas. As other have mentioned an area rug. Not too big. About the length of the sofas.

I would look for a colorful piece of art. I found this on allposters.com.

The cart would work as a end table between the sofa and loveseat. Its higher than the one there now band would raise the lamp higher. I think you need a much more substantial lamp, maybe a pottery one with some dark reds. I think the brick is art all by itself. Maybe some, 3, lights shinning down on it from the ceiling.. can't think of the proper word for it. If you want some art maybe a large metal piece of art. You could spray paint it what ever color you decide.

....accent lighting.. that's the word I was thinking of.

I agree with a larger piece of art on the brick wall and a complimentary rug…but no word art ever?…No! Express yourself with word art if you like it!

Celery, I like your ideas. I was thinking metal art but what you have looks great, like the colors too, especially the pillows.

This was my idea, metal art, not necessarily this one, but something organic, not formal...

The sofa is a good neutral color to work with.

I love the brick. Reminds me of this space.

You could just add some pieces to your current art over the sofa - make a gallery. You only need a couple of pieces, but you could add as many as you want.

And a rug. I love this Moroccan rug, but it’s a bit small. Something smaller like this placed on a diagonal can work well sometimes, though. Depends on the look you’d like.

    These are bigger:

I added a plant. You see I am not Picasso... 😂

It sounds like your instincts are good. Yeah, I’d eventually change out the tan furniture. Very monochromatic. I love your floors too! I’d do a rug too, but I’d be tempted to put it away during the warm months. There’s a lot of texture on that wall, so perhaps just one big piece and leave the rest bare to admire. Needs some pops of color and some contrast. If you want to keep the rug light and simple, get one of those woven rugs that have stripes or bits of black in it. If you like to keep those light tones on the wall, maybe one of those oversized framed photos of those shaggy highland cows, or some other black & white landscape, etc. Otherwise, if you want something quick but perhaps temporary, IKEA has great posters. Another look that is great in your type of space is an urban industrial style, but that doesn’t seem to be your bag. For now, just start with some colorful pillows and a throw, and maybe some bright glass vases to get you started. I also like the contrast of soft textures like velvet and fur against those rustic surfaces. I would keeps furniture lines fairly straight and un-fussy. I love rooms that evolve slowly and organically vs. looking like a staged model home. Looking forward to see what you do with it. It’s really beautiful already.

@Izzy Mn Your metal decor is too small, width is only 38". I think sofa is about 94" . I am afraid it would lost on the wall.

It’s a beautiful brick wall and I would prefer to add an interesting rug, wonderful pillows and my favorite art on the wall, plus an arc floor lamp, than have a different sofa. Your sofa is always going to be the least interesting thing to look at, so don’t get one that sets up a competition with other things in the room.

Brick will carry any type of art, so I see no reason to go monochromatic, or cover up the brick with oversized pieces of decor. Put what you like on the walls, including words (like, most of the words you see in public spaces are near or on brick!) Group them assymetrically, so everyone can still appreciate the brick.

Here are some rugs I would consider for your space
