odd ive never heard nor seen this in our MI .... which makes me very leery of the zone claims ... so i would probably place it for maximum winter microclimate ... lets say... out of winter wind... and well mulched ...

and it also makes me wonder if this was bigbox ... since you got a few ... they are famous for questionable material as far as zone ...

I had a pearlbush ’The Bride’ and loved it. Foolishly, I moved it last fall because it was starting to encroach on a path. I should have checked for information first. Apparently it only has a 10% chance of surviving transplant as an established plant. It looked pretty dead this spring but I’ve left it in place to see if any regrowth maybe comes from the base. Some twigs were not brittle and still showing some green. If it does die, I would likely try planting another young plant because I really liked it. I hope you do too.

Bred and selected in MN so plenty cold hardy

^^ Agree. Pearl bush - Exochorda x macrantha - is extremely cold hardy. Rated to zone 3. And this selection developed by Bailey Nursery, MN.

Thank you guys, and Woody thanks for sharing your love for them! I sure hope it survives for you. The bride looks lovely..looks to be a bit more weeping? I never knew there were so many varieties...they all look like bloom machines. I’ll be sure to post pics in the spring.

GardenHo - I kept ours pruned to a single trunk which kept it looking like a small weeping tree. Very attractive early bloomer - unopened buds are attractive too and are what gives it the pearlbush name.

Woody I may be able to experiment and do that with 2 of them. Will have to look closer. The third has multiple crazy branches so I’ll just let that one go...
