Help with Blues Festival St. John’s Wort!

Hi everyone. We planted these two in mid April and they bloomed and looked great, but now they are looking like this. They get morning and part-afternoon sun and I’ve been watering them during drought and otherwise around two days per week. They are in a sloped location that pools with water after rain a bit and is in clay soil that was amended with some bumper crop soil amender at planting. That is a mulberry tree and forsythia right behind them, of which the former dropped a lot of white berries earlier in the summer. The grass guy accidentally sprayed our back yard three weeks ago but he said he didn’t get near our beds; they were looking downhill before that but have gotten worse since so I’m not sure if it’s related or not. The other plants also have some yellowing at their base leaves and one of our smooth hydrangeas has lost most of its lower leaves though it is green when scraping my finger to see the inside of the stems. What can I do to help this situation? Thanks in advance!

Could be drift from the spraying, but unlikely if nothing else is affected. We never spray, so I only know what happens when our neighbors spray ends up on our property. Ugh. Maybe just summer uglies. Be sure to water deeply and not too often.

was it fully leafed out at planting???

yellowing of lower leaves [or interior leaves] .... is common transplant shock .. and if very minor.. can only show.. after the heat of summer hits ...

which might also make it a watering issue ... are you watering deeply enough thru the root mass planted .. to insure proper moisture at root depth .. lawn irrigation is rarely sufficient to get water down into the soil to root depth ....

take a hand trowel or tablespoon.. and dig a couple 3 to 6 inch holes around it.. in the gob planted.. and in native soil.. AND FIND OUT about moisture at root depth ... and then change your watering to account for such knowledge ...

most of us would suggest you never amend a planting hole .... especially if your alleged soil amender holds more water.. in your clay soil ... but im thinking that isnt the issue.. depending on what you find when you dig those holes ...
