New “Hi-Mag” lime

Hello all! I bought a different brand of lime today from Meijer. I usually use Espoma in the green & white bag but this one was twice the amt. for the same price. After I got home & was putting it in my garden shed, I relized that it said ”hi-mag lime” on the pkg. I was worried this may be too much magnesium & may hurt my plants. IIRC, Al said too much magnesium interferes w/ iron uptake? Here are the amts of magnesium in both brands:

Espoma:

mag = 10%

mag. carb. = 35%

mag. ox. = 17%

”Natura-Lime OP Hi-Mag Lime”:

mag =12%

mag. carb. = 41.7%

mag. ox= 19.9%

The o/a ratio of Ca:Mg should be somewhere within or very near the range of 3-5 parts of Ca to 1 part Mg; however, the amount of these nutrients should always be appropriate for the amount of N available. IOW, it's possible to supply Ca in the right ratio but have much too much/ too little of it in the medium. The only concern would center on the Ca:Mg ratio of the product you bought, but w/o knowing the fractions of the Ca compounds there's no way to tell.

You can pretty much be free of all this concern about nutrition by changing the fertilizer product you're using to Foliage-Pro 9-3-6.

Ken, Im using it in Al’s 5-1-1.

Tapla, I will look at calcium amounts in the 2 limes tomorrow & report back.

Tapla, here are the calcium amts:

Espoma:

cal. = 21%

cal. carb. = 52%

cal. oxide= 29%

Hi-Mag lime:

cal. = 20%

cal. carb. = 50%

cal. ox.= 28%
