Possibly pokeweed but saying "rather poisonous" is ridiculous hyperbole.

Thanks for the link, Jay. I knew the leaves were edible & now know how to prepare them. Umm, bacon grease and molasses.....

One of the very common weeds around here is mullein -- edible too.

I pulled out a pokeweed plant a few years ago with my bare hands not knowing what it was and broke out in a poison ivy like rash which I discovered is not uncommon. The berries are poisonous to humans - they won't kill you but will make you very ill. Don't just believe the responses you want to hear but do read up on pokeweed for yourself.

Make sure you only eat the young leaves and stalk. Cut the whole plant and cook stalks and all, or cut just the new upper leaves and stalk in a little older plant. Some people like the tender, young stalks more than the leaves. I knew someone who would slice the stalks into small pieces, freeze them, and in the winter she would bread and fry them like okra. I don't like poke at all, and want nothing to do with it. I don't even know how to cook it and don't want to know ! Lol !

Those plants look similar to poke, but I'm not sure that's what they are. If you scroll down on this site you will see what Poke looks like when it first emerges.

I agree with Woodrose. I have seen poke all of my life and that just doesn't look right. Looks more like malabar spinach to me. What do you think?
