if it hasnt leafed out by now.. those parts are probably dead ... and should be pruned out ...

or wait until next spring.. if you want to make sure ...

Thanks Ken for your thoughts ,so if those are dead, and being the main center branch(s) / leader, will the tree ever grow normal or will it be stunted growth?

what are you expecting form this thing ...

they arent big trees ... and they kind of do their own thing .....

trees dont really have nor need one single leader ... just walk around the neighborhood and look up in big trees.. after awhile.. there are multiple leaders ...

all trees releader ... its natures way ... yours already has 3 new leaders to the left ...

over the next 5 to 10 years.. you might need to do some creative pruning ... thats what we peeps who grow trees do ...

but odds are.. you will end up with black knot issues and probably will have to remove it in 15 to 20 years ... and this either happens or it doesnt.. so dont worry about this either:

knowledge is power .... but this isnt anything you need to worry about .. and i surely wouldnt dig it up and throw it away because of this ..

pruning is best done.. when leafless... so you can see the structure of the tree.. and choose wisely ... timing is somewhat important.. and its based on where you are .... big city name... its just about always helpful for us to know ....
