Can anyone tell what this is on my 5 year old Nectaplum tree (on citation). Is this canker? It’s on the trunk. Is this tree doomed? I got good production this year. Any comments appreciated!
Where cuts are made the tree will attempt to completely close it to keep bugs out. Looks like it’s doing it. Some bumpy stuff above that area too looks like a lot of good healing from different angles. Around the dead stub.
Oh man - thanks for all the comments! I gave up after nobody responded for a few days, and now I see this! Was this a bad pruning job? I admit I don't feel like I have the hang of pruning even now, but this tree was one of the first that I grew and I very easily could have cut too close or at a bad angle.
Looks ok… cutting when branches are still small helps, but sometimes it can’t be avoided and it should still heal fine. The bark may have split because the new wood forming around the cut underneath the bark is pushing up from underneath, growing so fast, stretching it. Just a theory but I’ve seen it before and the trees were always fine. Good luck!
