Put a few towels in with the mat to balance the load and it should spin and drain as usual.

Ralph Lauren makes nice woven 100% cotton bath mats/rugs. there is no backing to come apart.

I’m not going to keep the current one because it sheds too much. The machine has teeny bits of cloth all over. I can’t imagine that is good for the pipes or wherever the water is flowing to.

I also have a mat from target that always clogs the dryer lint trap and I have washed it probably weekly from years! The one from world market doesn't "shed" in the washer or dryer.

Try Ruggable.com. It's a great 2-piece system designed for washing the top layer. Lots of great designs and colors. No more 1970s fuzzy bath mats. Add style instead. If you are worried about slippage, there is an easy DIY product you can paint on the back.

Kohl's has a cotton reversible bath rug I love and have ordered enough to have a backup supply when these wear out. Finding a 100% cotton rug (or any rug) without that awful latex backing (I really hate that stuff.) that disintegrates, is getting more difficult every year. I like to wash our bath rugs in a very warm/hot wash.

Sonoma Goods for Life at Kohl's is what I've been buying. And I have been very pleased. Shedding in the washer/dryer has not been bad, and I would notice. They take a while to dry due to the thickness, and are reversible. I cannot speak for the darker colors, although I did buy a navy one and it did fade over a year of washing in HOT water. I did not notice that until I bought a "backup" rug in the same color. I mainly use white and other lighter colors.

The key word to look for are "reversible" in any bath rug. I like cotton because it absorbs water while the synthetic/nylon ones the water just sits on top.

I put a small cut-to-size rug liner (or whatever that stuff is called...pad?) to prevent slipping on the tile floors. It is so cheap that I can replace those every year or so, when they dry out.

I got rid of my bathroom rug because of having to go through several of them as you described, and also because they caught so much hair in them which was gross. I am now bathroom-rug-free and loving it! One less thing to clean. When I step out of the tub or shower, I put a towel bath mat on the floor, and those wash as easy as the rest of the towels.

@Shannon_WI Do you mean that you just use a regular towel as bath mat or is this some other product?

I agree with the Ralph Lauren all cotton both sides, recommendation. I've had one for 10 years. It washes up beautifully.

@Rachel Good to know, except that I very much doubt that quality today is same as 10 years ago. The product may be the same, but quality is likely no longer there. I experienced this decline in quality with RL boxers.

In answer to your question, a bath mat (sometimes also called a tub mat) is part of a towel manufacture’s line of towels. I.e., there is a bath towel, hand towel, wash cloth, and bath mat all made of the same material in that line. A bath mat is used specifically right outside the tub to step on and absorb water following a shower or bath. It is the same thickness and material as the rest if the towels, and is put in the washing machine with the rest of the towels. Just for comparison, my RL mat is a loop design. Perhaps check on ebay to see if there are discontinued ones on sale. I love mine . . . moved into a new home in 2020 and put it in my daughter's bathroom because it still looks good and is so absorbent.

Is this a rug for outside tub or shower? Why don't you try searching under 'tub mat' not bath rug. Only slightly denser than towels and will wash, dry beautifully right with those. I use tub mats outside two of three showers. Currently have those from Lands End.

For a more substantial washable in front of vanity, I've been using washable cotton 4x6' eco cotton rugs from Hook and Loom. No backing. Love them. I should buy a couple more for foyer and mudroom before wet winter weather ;0)

I bought an all cotton bath mat about 5 years ago from Walmart. Sorry I can't link it. I got a white one so I could bleach it. It has held up very well. I was afraid to wash the rubber backed one I had prior, as it kept shedding. I would dare say it's as good as new. I can no longer use LCB, but I do use and oxygen bleach and very hot water and a hot dryer. I would buy another in a heart beat.

I have thrown away so many good mats/rugs with the rubber backing. You would think in this day & age manufacturers would come up with a better solution. Maybe silicone backed?

I have used the same Ikea bathmat for a decade (I have bought a few in that time to be clear) I've used it in my airbnb as well as my home. Washed often, no problems. It looks like thick cut shag but is very absorbent and easy to clean
