Mix and Match countertop marbles?

Hi! We are currently choosing countertops for our new home. The center island cabinets are a light oak and the perimeter cabinets are a creamy white/white dove. The backsplash will be pictured subway color but vertically stacked for a more modern feel.

We are torn between our countertops! We want a high drama look and are thinking of doing the dark pietra charcoal honed marble on our island and the statuary on the perimeter. However not sure about it clashing with the backsplash. Other option is going with the Arabescato throughout. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated! Also we have already chosen the shaws farmhouse sink on island with an unlaquered brass bridge faucet if it helps!

You already have selected different cabinets (perimeter and island).

The general rule on Houzz (especially from the pros) is that you can have 2 cabinet styles with 1 countertop, or 1 cabinet style with 2 countertops.

I would suggest deciding which is more important to you (variety among the cabinets, or variety among the countertops), and then go from there.

If you have 2 cabinet colors, then you need to have just 1 counter. Or if you want 2 counters, then you need to have just 1 cabinet color. What you are talking about is too much going on. Sometimes you need to know when to stop decorating. Not "I need to make each individual element flashy". A space looks better when there is opportunity for the eye to rest. Also, as you discovered, finding a backsplash that will go with 2 cabinet colors and 2 counters is extremely difficult.

thank you!! so happy I posted here!

Have to agree with Shannon and kempek above. Having two different cabinet colors with two different countertops will look like two different kitchens, and not in a good way, sorry to say. I think the Statuario is lovely, but not quite sure how it relates to creamy white cabinets or the grayish white tile. The Arabescato is pretty busy, pretty white/gray, so similar problem. Most on Houzz would recommend choosing cabinets and counters before choosing backsplash, which I think is good advice. You should show your cabinets with the countertop choices for best help here. By the way, I love the honed Pietra Charcoal, but think introducing some color would be helpful.

Hard to tell in the photo but the backsplash has creams, grays and whites in it. I guess the designer figured this would go with almost any counter top we chose. Here is a photo of the cabinet colors

@houssaon thanks for the input! What other type of backsplash would you recommend?

BP, I have a two tone cab w/two diff countertops and a marble splash. There is no set rule that you can't have two and two. I see it all the time in photos.

If you flip the marble to your island the more solid gray to the perimeter, it will look less busy.

the key is to have one of the countertops a solid, or very subtle veining.

I like all of your choices, but the staturario demands the front space. I don't think doing the pietra works well with it. But I really love Pietra! It's a gorgeous stone. So is the other. Just not both of them together.

your tile is pretty simple, so that really isn't the issue.

You're bringing in a wood and a white, and then a very busy marble, with a another gray marble that also demands attention.

Let me show you mine so you can get an idea

I have Calacatta on the island and my tile (althought the tile is Calacatta gold. the island is not)

on the perimeter is Silestone eternal serena

here was my slab. don't forget you'll only see 24" of it, so it's not quite as busy as what the slab appears

mine is the island so you actually see more of it. Does it look overly busy to you?

here's the cloe tile w/light oak (is this the type of oak cab you're doing?) but they did an almost solid white perimeter and a marble island.

similar cabs, but a softer marble up the back

pietra perimeter, and a marble or Super White island. looks like they did it for a backsplash too

honed pietra on both, gray tile

pietra island, white perimeter, dark gray tile

I think you need to decide which one of those countertops you like the best, and pick something more subtle for the 2nd choiced

Or, do the matte Pietra on your perimeter, and the marble on your island. try and find a pietra w/less veining. Or go w/a quartz that looks like pietra

    Pental has one

Or try the Silestone Eternal Charcoal. (this is what I have only I got the lighter gray one.)

“There is no set rule that you can't have two and two. I see it all the time in photos.”

The ones pictured are quite large kitchens with very high ceilings and large tall windows. Yes, with that kind of space to work with, ”two and two” can be carried off. Is the OP’s kitchen similarly spacious with tall ceilings and tall windows? Furthermore, both the OP’s 2 counters are dramatic and strongly patterned - another reason why that combo won’t work (which Beth alludes to in her comments). Some of those photos above actually only show one cabinet finish with 2 counters, as recommended in this thread.

Hi @Beth H. : thank you so much! your feedback is incredibly helpful! Your kitchen is gorgeous!! I'm 99% the cloe tile is actually what we have down right now! @Shannon_WI thank you for your comments! I have a photo of almost the exact kitchen layout our builder did in a previous home which I can attach. It is just a photo of one wall but you can get the idea. I believe the ceilings are about 11ft.

It the light slab is on the perimeter, then I would find a color that goes with it. I like the tiles you selected, just not the color. The lighter slab seems to have green in it. Something like this would look good with your cabinets and the counter. Good luck!

These tiles are from Complete Tile - hand made in NY

I’m not a pro, but I think the Pietra on the perimeter, one of the other stones on the island and a new backsplash choice after everything is installed is the best idea. I agree with @houssan that the color of the tile is not great with any of the slabs. Wait to do the backsplash when your kitchen is done. I like the flashier stone for the island as opposed to the reverse.

thanks everyone! Leaning toward doing the statuary on the island. Debating if I should also do it on the perimeter or do an almost all white stone. I will continue looking for backsplash. Looking for longer/thinner artisan type with some uneven texture I think. If anyone has any recommendations for backsplashes that go with a statuary that would be so appreciated! Everyone has been so helpful so far! thank you!!

Shannon WI,,,I do see it all the time. I could post 200 diff pics if you like. I see some in large kitchens, and some not so large kitchens. I see some w/wood/white, or two tone painted. Would it help you visualize it better if I posted some others?

Smaller kitchen, two-tone w/wood, dark and light countertops. obviously these had to be subtle because the ower went w/a very busy floor. the backsplash is the Cloe tile.

(This isn't Pietra, although w/an island like this, it would work. The other would have to be a solid, especially w/that floor choice)

If you have 2 cabinet colors, then you need to have just 1 counter. Or if you want 2 counters, then you need to have just 1 cabinet color.

I must have missed this memo at the last kitchen remodeling meeting.

There is no set rule to the 2 and 2 and I still stand by it.

It just depends on the materials used, the colors, the overall design and what the OP finds attractive. Just because someone (Shannon) doesn't like the look, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done, or that it's wrong.

That being said, do I think the two countertop slabs work well together in this case? No.

Furthermore, both the OP’s 2 counters are dramatic and strongly patterned - another reason why that combo won’t work (which Beth alludes to in her comments).

(And NO, I didn't allude to it in my comment. Why are you so intent on calling me out on this? Peruse what I wrote).

"the key is to have one of the countertops a solid, or very subtle veining.

I like all of your choices, but the staturario demands the front space. I don't think doing the pietra works well with it. But I really love Pietra! It's a gorgeous stone. So is the other. Just not both of them together."

Since we can't see the kitchen, the layout or what the wood cabinets really look like, it's hard to say what would work in OP's kitchen.

Some of those photos above actually only show one cabinet finish with 2 counters, as recommended in this thread.

oh my goodness. yes two of them do. I was posting pics of the wood and white and asking if her wood cabinets resemble these wood cabinets. they also have the Cloe tile, which is also why I posted it so she could see the backsplash up against a more subtle countertop. And yes, you're very observerant to the one countertop w/those. I specifically pointed out how the two tone cabs would look w/the one countertop choice. (do you not read the captions?)

    you're a bit nit-picky today.

thanks for your critical comment to my reply. I'm sure BP found it very helpful.

BP, how artisan do you want?

Have you looked at the Zellege tiles?

oh wo, look at the two diff countertops. one is marble, one is a black quartz (looks like quartz)

This is the CleTile, Weathered White zellege

(I've used this tile in black in my own kitchen)

    Zia Tile, Casablanca White

shown here with a more patterned type of marble countertop and open shelving w/the oak.

    comes in a 4x4 too

another 2 and 2 choice. Yep, this looks horrendous.

there will be a lot of variation w/this type of tile, so you'll need to order a bit more.

If you want something less varied, you could do a glazed ceramic w/the artisan look

This one is the Newport 2.5X10 tile. (Tilebar carries it as does Home Depot and Wayfair under IvyHill)

Here's the Arabescato marble used as a backsplash behind the stove area. The countertop is very similar to the Pietra. (it could be a soapstone, or a quartz)

you could do a look-alike in a quatz. this is the Silestone charcoal in a matte

    or more of a gray

    Pietra di cardosa soapstone

    some have more veining

    Negresco in a honed finish

@Beth H. : Beth! I am LOVING the artisan zellige tile! I'm looking at these in the weathered white and also looking at the cloe tile. I made a small collage so you can also see my fixtures/style. Both are unlaquered brass so could look amazing witht he zellige if not too busy. you have been SO helpful! Floors are white oak.

If you're doing a honed finish, go with white. They will both etch and show wear, but the black will show far more.

I don't think you can go wrong w/either choice. Remember, the zellige is going to be more varied and very hand made looking.

Just so you can see, here's the Cle Zellige in black that I inset into my French Oak floors

why don't you order some samples so you'll have them on hand?

pick your countertops first, wait for install, and then come back to the backsplash.

    splash is always last.

Thank you! It's a new construction home that we went under contract with. We have to choose all of our finishes so they can order. I'll see if they can wait on the backsplash but I'm guessing they will want to do it all at once. I'm pretty set on the Statuary marble for the island. I love the pietra so thinking maybe in the side prep kitchen or mudroom so I can get it in somewhere.

I'm going to order some samples online of the Zellige. Off the kitchen is the mudroom with a black and white marble check floor. My faucets and pot filler are all unlaquered brass so they will patina. I don't want the backsplash to feel TOO modern against it. I love the stacked look but trying to figure out if horizontal vs vertical will make a different. Lighting on the tiled wall will be brass picture lights. You all have been so extremely helpful!

Hi everyone! just an update. We are going with the riad zellige tile backspash in SNOW. Cabinets are almost all in. Still debating between doing full kitchen in the Arabescato Corchia or doing just the island in the pietra and the perimeter in the statuario. thanks! Added some pics. The check floors are in the mudroom off the kitchen. THANK YOU

well I love it! that hood is amazing. (what's the plan w/it? copper? black? white? ) And I so love your marble.

I'm hoping those pendants work. because they're so large, I feel like they're going to visually block the back wall.

Beth, so funny you said that because I decided not to go with the pendants. We have antique brass picture lights going in above the windows so I'm thinking of going this directiokn,.. I made a terrible but helpful rendering to help myself visualize. Let me know what what you all think! As for the bscksplash I really loved the feel of the kitchen before it went in. It feels colder with the backsplash so maybe the color is off? I went with riad snow but now thinking maybe natural would have been the better move? It just looks Grey to me! Plan for hood is to be painted same white as perimeter cabinets,

It is cooler, but with your black stove, the wood elements, the brass, I think it will be fine.

do a wood band around the bottom of your vent hood.

Loo at studio mcgee. this is her design. Similar backsplash tile but see the warm wood trim on the white hood? along w/the warmer textured island chairs?

warm wood, black and natural elements.

this has almost the same cool gray/whitei tones as your kitchen, but w/the stools, the pendants, (and you can add a warmer runner) I think it looks good

do some warmer natural wood for the island chairs too

I don't care for this black island pendant you have here.

    I like this Atherton pendant

Or, these would work beautifully w/the natural wood and the zellige tile, adding some warmth to the cool marble tones

see? almost like yours. The wood does a lot.

and I like this style of sconces better than the ones in your rendition (which remind me of library or picture lights) Unless, this is the style you likek? see the lights over the little shelves?

I just think this type of light is more concentrated.

    black stove w/black/gold hood?

Thank you Beth! So much helpful info. I'm very into mixing old world with new. The rattan style is not for me. I actually rendered in those kelly wearstler pendants but thought they might be too bulky! Originally I liked them in brass but felt my kitchen is lacking contrast.

    last modified: 4 years ago

hmm, maybe the lighter ones? Do they have a white/brass version?

you said old and new. Do you like this mix?

similar layout to yours. (I hate this vent hood! I don't know why they chose this style)

Globe pendants and island stools. brass sconces over the window

what did you have in mind for the chairs?

you don't care for these? what about the sconces or the pendants?

have to see when the black stove and hood are finished before you really get an idea.

I’m not a pro, but I like the black and gold pendants that @Beth H posted. The stove is a huge star in this kitchen, as is the countertop, and I would carry the black feature to the lighting to bring more of it in. It feels like the white fixtures just get lost against all the white in the walls.

I have to add a comment because you ladies have me drooling. You’re ideas are gorgeous. I need this post in my feed. I am currently getting renditions from a few contractors for my kitchen and this is the style I am after. Personally, I like the white shaded pendants that were initially chosen, but I also like the black and gold option. Coming together nicely.
