Bathrooms Storage & Closet Design Dilemma

Master bath layout/floor plan advice needed.

Hello,

We are remodeling our master bathroom that also connects to a small walk in closet. Here's a little bit about the space: When you walk into the bathroom area, there is a double vanity on the left and open space to the right. Next to the vanity is a door that leads into the toilet and step in shower. Next to the open space on the right, there's another door that leads into a small walk in closet. The closet is basically to the right of the toilet and step in shower, separated by a wall. What I had envisioned is to break down the wall between the vanity and the toilet to open up the space. Then, extend the closet out into the unused open space. My dilemma is if we should reconfigure the entire layout and make the bathroom a little wider but have a more narrow closet so that there isn’t a part of the wall jutting out, or just keep the existing width and extend the closet to the unused open space to extend the length of the closet. I’m also wondering if putting up a wall to extend the closet would make the entire bathroom feel smaller. I have attached some pictures and have drawn out 2 different layouts. Please help! Would just add a traditional closet with bi-fold doors to the right of the words "open space" . Then consider adding a small wheeled cart bench cabinet for your shoes and as a part of your "dressing room" area to set items atop it as needed or sit on to put on your shoes.

IF you choose a shoe cabinet with doors, adding dryer sheets can help freshen the smell of the cabinet and, sometimes, even the shoes within it.

What I'd do:

- Keep the shower at 5' wide. I have a 5' x 30" shower (used to be a tub, replaced with a walk-in shower). It's not a luxurious size, but it's quite comfortable. I personally would not spend (or give up any closet space) to make a 5' shower longer. It's already good.

- You didn't mention shower details, but be sure you allot enough niche space for your toiletries -- a little 12x12 niche isn't enough.

- You say you're looking to widen the shower. I don't know how wide your original shower is, but it does look narrow in the original picture. At 30" wide, my shower is enough, but another 6-12" would be nice. Thing is, widening your shower will require moving the toilet stack, and THAT IS REAL MONEY. Probably the most expensive part of your proposed project.

- I'd remove the wall that encloses the toilet. This will bring natural light into your sink area and make the whole space nicer.

- Yes, definitely move the vanity to the wall. I can't imagine why the original builder didn't do this! However, if you're replacing the vanity, I'd downsize to one sink. This will allow you a stack of drawers for each spouse, which is more valuable than repetitive sinks.

- I'd go with the wider 6' closet -- but instead of either one of your proposals, I'd widen it across the room. Get a good, big closet. I'm guessing this'll give you 11-12' of hanging space + a 4' shelf for each spouse + a wall for hanging items (ties, hats, jewelry) to the left of the closet door. This could be a great closet.

What is the length of the west wall? Are you willing to move the toilet?
