Baseboards too tall! 5 1/4

Hi Everyone!

I am new here an remodeling my entire house and have made many mistakes but my most recent one has my stomach in knots!

Here’s the deal. I asked our contractor to install 5 1/4 inch baseboards bc I saw them at other peoples houses and liked it and now It has been installed in our house and I hate it. I feel like it’s too tall and doesn’t match the door trim. I really messed up and now it will cost 2k to fix.

What should I do?!??? HELP!!!!

Best to post some photos so everyone can get a sense of the proportion and how it looks with the door trim.

The easiest solution is to paint the baseboards the same colour and sheen as the walls so that they disappear.

If they are a very ornate profile, you could consider painting the lower part a contrast and the upper part to match the wall.

I couldn't find any pictures of doing exactly that but consider this picture....

In this situation, the idea is to make the baseboard look larger by adding an additional piece and then painting both pieces of trim and the exposed wall between all in the same colour. You could do the opposite. Paint the lower part of the baseboard whatever your trim colour should be, and then the upper profile paint to match the wall colour.

It will all depend on the style of your house and the profile you've chosen.

Of course, if you live with the the baseboards for a bit you might become accustomed to the size and it will become less of an issue. I'd have a hard time ripping it all out and starting over for 2K.

Paint the baseboards the same color as your walls and in a week you won’t notice those baseboads❣️

What is the proposed fix? How tall are your ceilings? How does your door trim look? I have simple 5 1/4 baseboards with 8 ft ceilings and don't find them too tall in the least.

Please post a pic of the door and baseboard together , I will bet there is really no issue at all. I have a walkout basement and along one wall there is a concrete piece the baseboard in that area is a lot taller than the others and honestly it is basically a non issue so what you have I bet will be just fine.

5 1/4 is pretty basic. We have 5 1/2 with 9' ceilings. Have 7 1/5" baseboards for 10' ceilings. The larger, the merrier IMO. I never thought about how they look with door casing.

What is your flooring? Shoe or quarter round along with your baseboards? If you have hardwood floors, stain the shoe mold to match and that will reduce the look in size of your baseboards.
