IMO you get what you pay for and this is no exception. Why not use the real thing in a samller sarea or even oreder one roll and use it in frames on a large wall.

LOWER QUALITY really ther eis no such thing as cheap looking even close to the same .

You could try to get a sample first, as you should with all things design especially if you are spending a considerable sum.

I have heard good things about some on etsy, or even tempaper. Many will let you customize it. Also I have heard a few ideas as I'm also interested on this.

I was looking into chinoiserie panels, but I was personally ok with printed papers, as even the ”cheaper” hand painted ones are very expensive.

Thank you, Vanessa. I definitely will get a sample. There are clearly many people who have purchased through lower priced alternatives, and have been very pleased. I have read through some older threads here, including one poster who showed beautiful pictures of her results. But my main concern for such a large scale piece is that the sample shows the silk. But it can't guarantee the artists put the promised level of detail throughout. I have a large room I am planning to paper.

Tempaper makes beautiful printed papers, and I know you can order Paul Montgomery's designs at a lower price when printed. But it is the hand painted paper (or silk, as it may be) I am after.

Patricia, I cannot agree that there is no such thing as looking close to the same. De Gournay's papers are hand painted in China. Their artists are not skilled, but rather are taught how to paint the wallpapers in workshops run by de Gournay. Their high price does not come from their artisan labor, but rather from things like their salespeople, showrooms, marketing costs etc. I absolutely think they do beautiful design work. But the idea that a simple painted design is something that cannot be duplicated does not track.

Again though, if you have actually laid your hands on some of these knockoff papers, I would love to hear your detailed feedback.

I have not gotten my hands on any of this awesome Chinoiserie but if Laurel recommended it I am sure it is amazing.

I've heard some of the artists have been trained by masters or used to work there - such as Gracie/DeGoueney.

Presuming a sample will allow you to see if you like the quality.

If not order 1 panel. I know that isn't the look you're after but if you live it you can order the rest of the panels needed to complete an entirely Chinoiserie room. I certainly don't have the financial ability to have that much of it but would love to see your outcome and project.
