Michael Aram canisters

last modified: 9 days ago

Hi…

not sure if this is the right forum to ask, but figured I would try. I have glass canisters from Michael Aram that I would like to use to store flour and sugar. They do have a rubber ring around the inside , but I dont believe they are airtight. I have called customer service, read up online and I get mixed responses Some say yes you can store flour and sugar and others say you cant. Does anyone that owns these use it for those purposes and if so, have you had any issues with the flour/ sugar going bad, hardening, getting bugs etc?

reviews on the canisters say they are not air tight.Once opened flour should be stored in an air tight container. Buyers love the canisters for a variety of reasons.

I'd store things that don't need to be contained for consumption if you love the look.

Thanks! yes,, I have read similar things. Yet, when I called customer service, the reps I spoke to said they can be used for it. I am hoping to maybe get some first hand experience from an HOUZZ members that perhaps may have rhem as well and use it to store flour and sugar. I appreciate the feedback so far with the info you found!

IMO it depends on how long you store the flour . I store my flour in the freezer and only store in a canister the amount I will use in a short time so for me no issue with these and they are beautiful I must say. The sugar is no issue unless it is brown sugar in which case it needs air tight and you can get a little sugar bear that helps keep it soft,

Those deserve something better than basic flour and sugar that could be stored elsewhere? : ) Like what?

Mmmmmmm Coffee, A couple varieties of teas.....

    or.......

High end candies, chocolates, and mix with colorful low end such as M and M's

    Or......

I'd want them in a bath, on a beautiful vanity. Cotton balls, Q tips. beautiful small soaps....etc

    As to brown sugar, ^^^

When will Domino or other get smart, and package this stuff in one time use small sizes. I mean a box of a dozen - 6 half cup, 6 1/4 cup. Something like that. Annoys the daylights out of me.

I agree about the brown sugar Jan. I think pretty canisters for mundane stuff is nice if you must have that stuff on your counter . I have large Ikea canisters I have had for 30+ yrs glass but lids not that pretty but all in drawers in my kitchen baking area so no need for pretty .

I have my flour and sugar in decorative canisters, but I use ziploc bags inside the cannisters. I had a problem with ants a few years ago, so nothing in my kitchen is in anything that ants could get into. Everything is either in airtight glass or plastic with screw-on lids or in ziploc bags.

^^^^A few weeks ago, I had some ants on my extended ledge behind my kitchen sink (for some reason, I cannot remember the name for a casement window that extends out because of a deep ledge over the sink). This was the first summer that I’ve had ants - luckily, they were just around the sink area (all my canisters + food items are in the pantry).

Using ziploc bags inside canisters is a great idea if you have decorative ones on your counter. I wouldn’t purchase the ones you’ve shown unless they will be displayed on your countertop vs. hidden away inside a pantry.

Where do you live? Region/climate will make all the differance in this decision. Would I use them in Florida-no. Here in the northern midwest yes.
