Are the soapstone counters durable and easy to take care of? They are beautiful!

@igukke: The extra drawer on the fridge is a freezer drawer.

@kubla: We LOVE our soapstone counters, and they are indeed very durable. Soapstone is nonporous and resistant to both chemicals and heat, so they don't stain from spills or burn if you put a hot pan on them. The soapstone does get minor scratches, but these disappear into the patina once oiled or waxed. However, the maintenance in the first year, if you want the finish on the counters to look dark and even, is more than many people want to bother with. We waxed them every month or two at first (a ten minute job in our small kitchen). But now that they are a little over three years old we only use soapstone wax on them every 6-8 months, and waxing is totally optional. Some people like the patina that develops without the oiling or waxing.

thanks for the info---I had also chosen that fridge for a kitchen reno but was told that it needed to have 15 of door seing for access. What is on the other side of the left door?

@desgn31: Do you mean where is the swing clearance for the right hand french door of the fridge? There is an angled wall next to the fridge that is mostly an open doorway (you can just see the trim edge of it in the bottom right of the photo), so the fridge door swings open into that doorway space.

Hi, Feeny--thanks for the picture. Very helpful. I am curious as to how you got the fridge to look so flush without having purchased an actual built in. Do the doors open to 90 degrees only? Most of the GEs that we have looked at seem that when they open past 90 the doors will hit whatever is next to them (which in your case and identical in our case), is that counter to the left. We have that huge cavernous space, so I want to make use of it and I am going for that completely flush look that you have without having to purchase a counter depth (both because of the cost and the fact that they are not as deep--we have the space so I want a deep fridge). I just don't love how the majority of fridges that are "counter depth" are really counter depth + a few inches to account for the door hinges.

Hi whitjank! Okay, here's how we did it (or rather how our cabinetmaker did it). First, our cabinets flanking the range are custom and just slightly deeper than standard cabinet dimensions, as we built them to go out to the front of the range so it would look flush. So the cabinets with drawers are 25" deep and the counters 26." Then our cabinetmaker built the frame around the fridge to come out just a little past the cabinets and counters (27") so that the edges of the counters end against the framed wall rather than sticking out past it. Then, with the extra depth this provided at the back of the fridge frame cabinet, we pushed in the fridge and tried out just how far in we could put it and still open the doors all the way (and they do open all the way on both sides). So instead of the usual 3-4" of clearance or so for the doors to open, our doors only stick out 1" (not counting the beveled edge and the handles) because that is all it actually needed for the doors to open. Now, it is possible that this only works because this particular GE Monogram counter-depth model has beveled edges on the doors, which allows them to open wider without bumping into the framing. But it might have worked even without that. The crucial thing is to build the fridge frame a few inches deeper than the fridge's specs so that you can adjust yourself where it sits in relation to the cabinet edges. Also, the inside of the fridge cabinet is a bit wider and taller than the opening at the front so that the fridge has breathing room inside. Hope that helps!

What brand/color tile did you use?

The tile is from Subway Ceramics and the shade is "Bone" in a glossy finish with "Alabaster" grout.

What a great kitchen! on the fridge... I notice the panel trim is very close to fridge door hinges, don't these have risk of rubbing against the side cabinet panels surrounding the fridge? or do they only open 90 degrees?

We've never had a problem with the panel trim and the hinges, and the doors open the full range. It might help, however, that the edges of the refrigerator are beveled.
