Kitchen vent hood design dilemma

We are remodeling our kitchen and the layout is staying the same, but we are getting all new shaker cabinets to the ceiling and im moving the microwave and replacing it with a vent hood. I originally wanted a vent hood insert concealed inside of the wooden uppers, but my husband hates that idea. so now im looking at under cabinet hoods. I am specifically looking at the Zephyr Tempest I or II, with the major difference bring the height (one being 11 inches and one being 18). I think i’m liking the look of the taller profile, but worried it will look odd in our small kitchen. we will probably pull the hood out about 2” from the 12” cabinets on either side to add some elevation interest, but not certain. Above the vent hood would be a cabinet, and any vent hood option would be 30”. All thoughts appreciated - even if its a completely different direction.

For cabinets above, and with the size and scale of your kitchen, I like the smaller one.

You've kind of got the cart before the horse. You need to first determine your ventilation needs and then what hood options will meet those needs.

What range will you have? How often do you cook? What styles? Where are you located (e.g., what is the weather like)?

Our range is staying the same. its just a standard gas GE range. We cook every day but nit doing anything crazy like flambaying haha.

The taller one is just too big - I think it will look out of proportion. I also would not pull it forward. You don't need to "add elevation interest " The hood sticks out and handles that. Plus, with this layout , you don't need it.

If you are looking to add interest, do a beautiful backsplash and nice handles...

I installed a Broan Antero 400CFM fan. I originally considered styles similar to what you posted but I thought they looked too big (I made cardboard mock-ups). I chose this Broan Antero due to it's lower profile. Here's a picture right after I installed it:

Also, check your gas stove specifications for minimum distance to the hood. I think that building codes are also involved in having a minimum distance of 30" between hood and gas range. We have a range/mw combo with only 24" separation; but hoods need more distance.

Thanks for everyone's input. @User as far as the layout, unfortunately it isn't something I think we can change. The refrigerator has to stay where it is because we need to pull it out to access the attic (very old house with some odd things going on). I'm not sure how else we could change it without knocking down wall and creating other problems (the fireplace is behind the longer wall, and the house itself is old old 1930's 920sf house so it has it's quirks). I've had designers over who say the same thing so I think we are just stuck with it as is. That being said, I was worried about the layout when we purchased the house but it actually works pretty well. When you are cooking at the stove the rest of the kitchen remains open for people walking through and reduces congestion in the kitchen. @Lisa yes we would have to raise the hood to about 30" above the stove.
