I can't say I've ever noticed that, but then again I haven't really gone looking that closely at mine -- I just leave them be to do their thing, no checking on them or fussing for the most part. But, I did go out there and look for you, and no new green leaves coming off the stems. There are light green flower buds forming off the stems, even though they are blooming from the top. So maybe that's what you have -- more flower buds, not leaves. ??

summer flush of leaves can appear wonky.. especially in hard summers ...

if i saw something like this.. regardless of the type of plant.. i would think to myself i ought to check back in mid to late sept.. to see what came of it all .. and odds are.. i would never think of it again ... lol ... unless it was so bad it caught my eye again during fall cleanup ... and then id think.. i better remember to look at this again in late spring... and odds are again.. i would not remember .... .. lol .. it would either be dead.. or just fine ... and if it was dead.. good riddance.. i dont need your BS in my garden ...

Okay, I was out there yesterday and took another look and down near the lower 1/3 of the stems I do see new green leaf growth. Huh.

The bright green foliage is darkening.
