No advice except I LOVE your rug

Thank you! The sofa is pale grey, but it’s horrible and not our “forever” sofa. What’s throwing me off is the historical details of the room (which I love). Here are some other elements of the room (ignore the IKEA rug, we just had it there while the orange rug was being cleaned). I’m worried grey would be anachronistic.

I love the idea of navy, but the other predominant color in the rug is black, which…. It wouldn’t gel.

Love the idea of integrating leather — cognac sounds lovely! Any particular style ideas to fit with the period? How do you guys feel about navy going up against the black in the rug? I am feeling velvet in this room. Maybe something a little Art Deco?

No navy. Stick with cognac in leather and keep the matchbox cars off the sofa 😉
Work with an interior design professional/ store to find appropriate print fabric for upholstered side chairs (swivel rockers are my favorite).

That photo above with the teal walls is great inspiration! As for furniture, I would lean into a Chippendale or deco style. Victorian is too fussy for the 20s esthetic, but a simple piece with Queen Anne legs would still be fine. It would have been rare for a 20s home to have all pieces from that period - some would have been inherited from previous eras. Other colors would be any other cool tones from lavender through greens. On the other hand a saturated pink would give it a playful look. My preference, though would be that teal or hunter greens. Those feel a bit more historic to me. Add some zebra or other animal prints and some other neutral woven textures. Sprinkle black accents liberally to keep it tied together. Geometric prints like bamboo lattice wallpaper or other Hollywood Regency and oriental/Chippendale styles would balance the drama of the rug. Also mirrors and metallic finishes will finish it off just right.

I’d look to the Art Nouveau period for inspiration. Alphonse Mucha blended orange, green, red and earth tones so wonderfully. I could see a light green or warm taupe on the walls with the other colors as accents.

Fun with visualizations

How are you guys making these mock-ups? I’m a visual learner so I feel like this is the only way I’ll be able to proceed! I love Art Nouveau, but with this bold rug, I’m worried it would be too much. If the rug is bold, keep the rest of the room more streamlined? Or let it all swirl around?

Liz, I am not a sophisticated Photoshop user. I used a combination of Benjamin Moore's Personal Color Viewer that lets you virtually try out colors on a room and Microsoft Word, which has a limited suite of tools for manipulating images. For this, I used Word to put the fireplace and rug next to the room so I would have them for reference, snipped the image, then used the BM tool to try out paint colors and save the images I liked. Then I pulled them back into Word and added the sofas.

One key thing to know in Word is to format the image to wrap text in front of text (this lets you layer one image on top of another). The picture editing tools let you remove backgrounds, crop, rotate, flip, and move images up or down in the stack (when they are layered). If you want to get really crazy you can use 3D rotation when you are trying to "hang" artwork when the wall in the photo isn't straight on.

I search ’online collage maker’ and look for the easiest ones. :D

So IG has decided to suggest a bunch of pages to me that are similar in style to your house, and with velvet sofas. 😄

Whoa how crazy is that? We even have the same light fixture! This is awesome because I was playing with the idea of white walls, but didn’t know how it would look with the dark trim. Either way…. Velvet is calling my name!
