Here is what I have………June in three different conditions.

90% shade, it just got transplanted to a sunnier spot a week ago. It is leggier in these conditions.

This one is in a half day of sun.

This one is in 90% sun…..is definitely smaller, and I confess, not enough water.

I like a half day of sun best.

Sherry, I can see that the June in the shade is "leggier" than the one in the sun. Pretty coloring though. You have that plant in a lot of shade. Then the one in half day sun is the look I have been striving to achieve when I put my June in more sun. Pretty!

Nicholsworth, so the first trio are pictures of the same Junes? The second photo (in early summer) is the coloring that I would love to see my some of my Junes! The second trio---the picture in early summer---also gorgeous!

UTOG, I think your June coloring is what I have also achieved with my two older hosta in mostly shade. I think the green/blue coloring is so lovely.

I just went to have a look in the Hosta Library to see the different coloration in the Junes. It seems to me that most of them are in sun, part sun or partial shade. A couple of photos have strange coloring. It could be the camera. Maybe one photo is taken of a June in the shade. Sherry, the June coloring of your 90% shade photo, and UTOG, the coloration of your June photo, is not well represented in the Hosta Library (in my opinion!).

I have 4 Junes. Three in shade and one in sun, but not all day sun. I have always liked the shaded color better. These pics are from today so they look surprisingly green, unless I’m getting Halcyon reversions. :-)

Debra, your sun June does look like it is reverting. But we are getting later into the season so it's something to watch for next year.

Isn't it strange to get different coloration on the same hosta when part of it is in more sun? I have one like that. It's kind of neat!

I'll have to take a picture of my two potted Junes that I wished had more yellow in them. I've put them in a couple hours of sun, but they don't look as attractive as the shade Junes.

I have 2 of them. One in shade and the other in half day sun. I definitely prefer the one in the shade. I love how blue it looks in the shade. I agree with Newhostalady, the one in the sun gets yellow and isn't as attractive as the one in the shade. I like yellow but I prefer "blue June"

I think what I was trying to say specifically was that if June is not in sufficient sun (more than 1/2 a day), it won't develop the nice bright, yellow center. It will be more yellowish, but not as brightly yellow.

Here are a few more of mine. The pictures were taken yesterday:

These two pots received some sun---perhaps a couple of hours. The one on the right received more midday hot sun. It looks like they didn't even develop any seed pods. Actually the two in ground June hosta I posted above didn't produce many seed pods.

This June of mine receives the most sun of any of them. It also receives midday sun---3 hours at most. The yellow in the center did develop. You can still see that now. But I still don't think it was enough sun to bring out and keep the yellow center. But it does seem happier---that is, if you go by the number of seed pods it developed!

These Junes are the color I prefer as well. I noticed how green that one is looking. I have had reversions on that June already. Here are a couple of others in shade. Looking somewhat green too.

I think the coloration on Paradise Joyce is more beautiful and stable in comparison, also being from Halcyon, the famous creator of so many blues.

Of the five Junes I have, I have never had a reversion. Funny how some revert and some don't.

I agree with you Debra, the green/blue June is the best!

Your Paradise Joyce is a winner! Now you made me want one!

Paradise Joyce is lovely! the only June color I’m not fond of is the mostly sunny location. i placed it there as an experiment, was wondering if the leaves would brown out…..nope!

Sherry, are you saying you are not fond of your June in full sun---the one you posted above? If so, I think that your June is quite young. You could change your mind about how much you like it after you see it mature more.

I'm happy for this posting, as I just got one in late fall last year. It's still pretty small, and just not very impressive yet. I'm fairly new to hostas, but fell in love with them when bored during the winter and just looking at everyones pics!

June is one of the best hostas---good growth, thick leaves, beautiful coloration and stays pretty for most of the season!

That's how things start---with just one hosta! Hope to see you at this forum more often, gawdinfever! This forum has a lot of good, knowledgeable people to help you!

I just noticed this today, that a division of June that I planted in the spring and is under a Japanese Maple drip line, is much darker with less attractive coloring on the foliage. It's in more shade than the one I dividied, which is in a few hours of sun. I like the one in more sun for sure.

I have some nice sized beds I just created to plant more hostas and perennials!

I'm stoked about this. I've been propagating, buying, and planning like a mad woman!

I will have the back area of this water feature we're doing. I have a side yard + (which is huge!), and 2 smaller beds I'm prepping as well. I am so excited for next year already!

The one June I have I don't think gets quite enough light. I'm thinking of getting two more for the bed with a couple hours more light.

GawdinFever, glad to hear that you are creating new beds for more hosta and other perennials! Then, I know, for sure, you will be joining us on a regular basis!

It's really difficult to stop "propagating, buying, and planning." In fact, I'd say that is the hardest part!

Sounds like you have a lot of excitement going on in your garden and a lot of room to work with. Looking forward to seeing more pictures of your new beds and finished water feature!
