Retro charm in basement

Our basement is a 1960s time capsule. The entire thing, minus one wall, is panelled in wood. We need to do some updates: new ceiling with pot lights, new flooring to cover the original vinyl tile. But I really want to keep these wood panels!
Should we leave them in place? Or carefully remove them to do new insulation, then put them back? I'm scared of damaging them but new insulation is probably important, right?
The picture I've attached doesn't do the wood justice, it's more golden in colour. What's a good colour for carpet that will be somewhat in keeping with the era of the house?
