Kitchen backsplash

I recently renovated my kitchen. I compromised with my husband on the backsplash. I wish I hadn’t. I think it’s too busy. I don’t hate it. But would probably been better as a focal point from the stovetop all the way up behind the vent. Then doing the rest of the backsplash using maybe a light gray subway tiles. What do you guys think? Any suggestions, recommendations or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You may get used to it. Do you have under cabinet lighting? Once the countertop is more lit, and you have a couple of small appliances on the counter, and maybe a small plant, etc. - the backsplash pattern will be broken up a bit, and it won’t be such a focal point. It has personality. There are so many generic kitchens with plain subway. I see a ton of them. Don’t get me wrong - simple subway can often work well; it depends on the situation. But it is very typical. Sometimes it’s just nice to have something more unique..

If it bothers you, and you and/or hubby don’t want to redo the backsplash, you could possibly put some peel & stick tiles over some of it; if the surface is smooth enough, you could put the tiles right over the existing splash. Home Depot carries various.

Or alternatively, you could break it up with some peel and stick/removable wallpaper.

With your island counter, pendants + overall kitchen, I actually think a white might work better than a grey.

And the back piece/riser on your countertop is actually considered to be a backsplash, by the way; so if you are keeping that piece, you don’t really need an additional backsplash.

I love it. It is cool. One of the better materials choices I've seen on this forum. There are other things that would bother me more. You already had a 4" backsplash so that should have been removed and not sure why the overhang on all 4 sides of the island? I would have done rounded corners

I like it. Generally not a fan of the busier backsplashes, but as someone else mentioned, it looks almost like wallpaper.

Your kitchen looks fantastic. Once you add some decor (and I would make that non-busy solid colors, solid color runner, and perhaps some botanical art and a few plants) I think it will look even better.

    Enjoy your beautiful kitchen!

just noted the island overhang......seems the task side would be almost impossible to get into the cabinets. Is there an intention to this? or a boo boo? I might spend time exploring if the top could be pulled and recut. If you want in to the cabinets anyway.

I don’t mind the tile. I’m not a fan of the 4” splash together with the backsplash though. Maybe a difficult fix now. You can try to live with it for a while to see if it grows on you.

Thank you for your feedback!!Agree, some appliances, lighting & decor will make it come together. OMG didn’t realize the 4’’ splash needs to be also tiled, that’s a boo boo(I have extra, should I add it?)The overhang on island is for extra leg room and barstools. But rounded corners is a good idea.

Don't need to tile the 4" -- it looks great as it. It's just a more recent trend to not have the short splash first. Frankly, and especially in this case, I like it and would leave it!

I agree. Once everything is on the counters and everyday life settles in, you won’t be focused on the backsplash.

I vote with @User on this. With your selections I like the 2 material backsplash (4" countertop material + tile).

You'll find many commenters and Pros on here that will jump all over it as wrong. Please ignore them. Now if you had done something that looked like this - then OFF WITH YOUR HEAD! :-)

But you didn't so rest easy and enjoy your kitchen.

Here's another kitchen where they did what you did to a lovely effect:

    And some others.

Finally, if you do have some left over tile (and it's enough) consider tiling up around the window to the ceiling.

I think your kitchen looks lovely. Once you have your usual kitchen counter items back on it’s going to be fabulous.

Usually, you either do a counter to under the cabinet backsplash or a 4 inch one not both but I think it looks fine the way you have it.

    Enjoy your beautiful new kitchen!

It's not bad. I kind of gives a "retro-hip" feeling to me, might be fun to have some retro style small appliances with some bright colors. I wouldn't worry about it, live with it for a bit, don't feel like you have to decide now.
