Another no name

Hello, I've bought this hosta a year before and still haven't found its name. You can see that when it first appears it has a yellow margin which disappears through the season ( In june the leaves are plain green). Its flower are purple and don't have a scent. It bloomed in the middle of June.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Alex, those plantaginea are beautiful. I do wish mine would bloom one day. It has languished for 4 years now.

Gemstone is a cute, common, very small to small hosta with a form like the NOID Alex photographed. Generally, I like to think that a NOID is something very common (which means probably sturdy, good) or not a new release. Alex's photos reminded me of my Gemstone right away, but the marginal variegation made me search for sports or close relatives. (google search hosta fransen gemstone to get to the interactive link for hostaparadise, and then click on sports, pod/pollen and also the ancestors, a 3-5 minute search). Gemstone is an offspring of venusta, and Kinbotan is a marginally variegated offspring of Gemstone that I have seen for sale in the online hosta stores. I am probably not right, but it does me no harm to guess. I like puzzles.

Alex, I have no idea, but I think it jas a lovely flower. Maybe utog or steve or bkay…….or someone will ID it.Or it may just be a noid. I have had fun naming a few of my noids. Got that idea from utog.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have looked up the photos from hostalibrary and it looks very similar.

I think my hosta lost its yellowish margin because I haven't taken enough care of it. It also had chlorosis. I will put a part of the plant in a pot and place it in a place with more sun.

Yes, alex………. not taking care of your hostas will yield poor results, and sometimes taking good care of them can yield poor results to………, hahaha! And yet, yours does not really look bad at all, especially for this time of year when everything begins to look crummy.

You think so utog? It’ just that Gemstone looks so much bluer………buut as ken said, it’s young. BTW—->> I want to know the secret to you being so good at IDing hostas. I thought you had only been doing thid for a ”few” years. Inquiring minds want to know!! :-)

Ken, I've actually followed your advice and mulched them this year. I've used dried grass. Though, it is quite decayed now. Here are a few photos where it can still be seen . I'm planning in using woodchips next year.

Debra the small ones seem to need the most care :( I like them though, I will try to mulch them better and perhaps they will look better next year. The big ones are still looking pretty good. Especially, H plantaginea which is still flowering =)

Here is a picture of Gemstone on right, Tiny Gems on left 7/11/21. Blue turns green in mid to late summer heat.

Well utog, your logic and process works! You have become one of the go to persons in the forum for IDs. I like the search too but don’t alwasy find time. But I admit that alex’s hosta looks like your Gemstone.

alex, your H. Plantagineas are beautiful.!!!! I am very envious. I bought one small bare root one and the following spring it was hardly there. I tossed it. I want to buy another, but it needs to be amuch larger size, maybe quart or gallon size, but they are hard to find at that size.
