This has me excited...

...and that would be these pods on a 'Princess of Karafuto'. They're on a scape from a shoot that showed obvious signs of what I sometimes call going off script: several leaves showed a substantially wider variegation, like this....

Pods that show either white sections or are completely white, have the potential for variegated or streaked seedlings, sometimes even all-white ones, also called fatal-whites since there is no chlorophyll present which is rather needed of course.

Coming spring will tell the story...

Some of you will have followed my stink bug episode and the conclusion I ultimately came to change. And at least part of the reason I figured I'd come to wrong conclusion has to do with the pods posted in this thread: they're done. On the ground. Never saw a stink bug anywhere near the plant. Out of all the scapes with pods on this plant the pesky vermin had to pick the one with these pods on it. The scape was nibbled about halfway and the pods chewed on and on the soil below the pot.

All I can hope for now is that the pods were ripe enough to be viable and that they'll sprout come spring. I have the plant now identified as to where the sporting happened and hopefully we'll see more next year, that's a long shot shot though going with past experience with sporting shoots on other hostas. So sad, too bad, that's life....

I am sorry to hear about this. Sometimes gardening can feel so tragic, with the arbitrary damage from vermin so personal.

So was I, Barb, so was I. I have since discovered very similar pods on my 'Remember Me' and I've taken the precaution to put that pot into a closed-off area where rodents shouldn't have access---famous last words of course....

Check my comment for protecting tomatoes from rodents at the link. You may be able to do something similar with scapes.

As a follow-up to this post none of the seeds that were dispersed shown in the last picture sprouted, which doesn't really surprise me as I figured they weren't quite ripe when I took the picture. And as expected, the wider margin shown did not re-occur this year, there's always next year though, hope springs eternal and all that....
