Mixing stripes (and florals)

I had another thread but it seems to have fallen by the wayside. Would like new sofa and chair for my sunroom. I’m thinking of a wide stripe for the chair (or sofa) and then a narrow stripe for the other. Either of the florals will be for pillows. The two floral choices can really go with any of the stripes. Do you like the different stripes together or should I cover the sofa and chair in the same stripe? I really need opinions. Thank you!

Background of the floral is dark navy not black

Background of this pillow fabric is much brighter

Good, I’ll try to find a similar color to my family room coffee table color. Hope I don’t end up with like 8 cans of spray paint. Lol. Have never used Rub n Buff. Are you familar enough with their colors to tell me which one to buy for the Baker’s rack? Should i use Rub n Buff on the table bases too? Wondering if i do that, since fhe metals are different colors to begin with, will they end up looking different?

I have used Rub n Buff on all kinds of surfaces. It is a oil based kind of metallic cream. You can thin it down if you want with mineral spirits if you want a more opaque look. Full strength, it covers beautifully. You will be wondering around the house seeing what else needs a touch up. Very fun. Make sure you get enough so the colors stay uniform. Get several tubes and the Ebony is good to have too because you can darken colors a bit if you want. Have fun with it. It’s addictive!

So much easier than spray paint! Pick color you like best. But do order plenty. While it goes a long way, you have large items. Enjoy!

If you are nervous, Hobby Lobby usually has antique gold and a few others. You could get a tube and test it out.

Looking at those colors I think I like the gold leaf the best. I just watched a couple videos about applying it. Thanks for the info! The cats will hope I don’t turn them gold!

I love your Thibault fabrics! You say you want all of your metals to “match.” Why? I would do something in a blue! You have a bakers rack, a coffee table, and two end tables. Perhaps paint the end tables blue.

"You use fingers and rub the color on. Wear tight fitting gloves to protect your skin from gold staining. It is easy and fast!"

I purchased an inexpensive set of make-up brushes and use them to do my R&B painting. Much easier and less messy than using a finger.

"Hobby Lobby usually has antique gold and a few others. You could get a tube and test it out."

I have the Antique Gold and find it to be a true gold...almost too gold when put on this wood coat rack. I toned it down with a little black gel stain. The hooks remained full strength.

Thanks @ptreckel. I really like the fabrics too! i actually have the baker’s rack, coffee table and only one end table. I could consider doing the baker’s rack gold and the two tables blue.

Flo, what would you think of me moving this lamp below (is in family room now) to the end table in the sunroom? There is another lamp I saw that I love and I’m wondering if this lamp below could work in the family room. (where the leaf lamp is now) Family room is so neutral I feel it could. The lamp is blue and there is blue in the oriental rug although a different blue. @flo mangan

Lamp that could move to sunroom

Lamp I could purchase for family room

@nhb22 thanks for that photo and idea of using the makeup brushes. I kind of like the gold leaf color that Rub n Buff has at least from Flo’s photo above. @homechef59 thanks I will definitely order that sample pack, very helpful. Your light fixture looks great!

About the lamps. I think the leaf one would look great in the sunroom. Not sure about the color of the other one for the family room. It is a pretty lamp but from here looks too minty green?

I think I will move that leaf lamp to the sunroom. The color of this other lamp is called ”breeze blue glaze” so who knows as far as the color. It really appeals to me because i think it’s elegant but doesn’t look stuffy. Also, since the legs on the coffee table are gold and the floor lamp is gold I like the idea of mixing it up with the porcelain. Any lamps that you love Flo? I suppose I could order it and return if it doesn’t work but repacking lamps is a pain! They don’t want to go back in.

Flo, here is the existing end table with the leaf lamp. I’ve been looking on and off for a year for a new end table. I saw the one below at the store when we were looking at sunroom furniture. It’s got a white marble top and it’s 20” round. Wasn’t sure I want a round end table since my coffee table is round but after looking at many Houzz photos, I found a lot of rooms with this combination. So I will need a lamp without a huge shade if I buy this new table. There is also a glass end table I like but I don’t really want two glass tables. Maybe you will want me to post another photo when I get the new end table as opposed to a mock up with what I have now.

    @flo mangan

This table is really pretty in person and the gold should go well with the gold of the coffee table legs.

Have an in real life pic of this one and it’s a much duller gold but pics are blurry

I found a lamp at a reasonable price on sale I think would be great on the round white and gold table. Here is mock up. I like the black and gold because it refers to nearby art. And the table. It’s so interesting. A wood kiwi bird would look cute along with a small green plant.

The first one is perfect size (my favorite!). It is 30” high and 9” wide. So perfect for a 20” wide round table. That price for this quality lamp is amazing! I am tempted to get one myself! 😹

I’m glad you like the table. I like the Lucas McKearn lamp (and yes great price) but I think I need a lamp with a bigger and lighter shade. I like to sit thera and read and although we have can lights in the ceilimg I rarely turn them on. Don’t like their ambiance or lack there of. I really like the Robert Abbey lamp a lot. The shade isn’t too big? What’s the rule of thumb for shade size? Obviously a shade can’t be wider than the table. I have that green chair in the other side of the room and wouldn’t that tie in well? Where is the one below from?

  • PRO

If you do the round table, the Robert Abbey shade is too big. Beautiful lamp though. Round tables are a bit of a challenge because shades tend to take over. This table is 20” round. So the lamp shade needs to be 12” wide at most so there is 4” clearance all around. Since it needs to be reading light too, this will require more searching. I will look about tomorrow. 🎃

The Stimpson is too big for the 20” table. It’s pretty though.

I’ve been looking around for lamps with 12” shades, which is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Maybe I’d be better off with that square glass end table. It measures 24” wide.

    What are heights of tables?

    last modified: 4 years ago

The round Uttermost marble topped table and Serena and Lily glass table are both 22” high. The sofa arm is 24”. There is also a 24” round table from Serena and Lily. But for the insane price it’s made of ”stone veneer”. I’m posting a photo of the in real life gold of the Serena and Lily glass and the stone veneer tables. The gold on these is definitely not as bright as the gold on my coffee table. I like the lamp below, the shade is 14” at the base so I’d have 3” on a side with the marble topped table. But maybe too ”stuffy” although it’s a pretty lamp. @flo mangan

Real life photo of gold on above table and also the square 24”glass table

This lamp is really pretty but maybe too traditional? I like the ”airiness” of the pattern

OK, funny, but I saw a lamp in my new Serena and Lily catalog! Love their stuff but it is pricey. With your sofa arm at 24 (standard height) and table at 22, it will take a taller lamp to get the light you want. The lamp I saw is the Dauphine Table Lamp and the catalog price was $298. On line, much higher. The lamp is 23.5" high but the shade is 12" so that is nice. It is very minimal look, but might work. With the photo you posted previously, the current wood? table is roughly the same height as the arm of the sofa? I would find a 24" high end table. I have also been looking for a pretty "reading" lamp for that spot. Tough finding just the right combination. I think you need to get the table first. Then we can find the right lamp for it. RH has some floor lamps that are very slim. You might be able to do one of those and a round table and just put decor on the table with your book and a accessory or two. Check out the Dauphine Table Lamp. It is quite lovely even though it is simple in style.

I also think that the Serena and Lily lamp you found could work (They are having 20% off which helps a bit with their ridiculous prices) but I kind of had my heart set on a porcelain lamp. The floor lamp in there is gold leaf, the coffee table base is also gold leaf and i suspect whatever end table I end up with (and the Uttermost and Serena and Lily tables are the first i’ve liked) will be gold on the base. I’m afraid of overdosing with gold. To answer your question, the current slate table I have is a tad higher than than the sofa arm. I called a Serena and Lily store today and a sales associate measured the stone veneer table and it’s a bit under 25“ even though online it says 25”. I was questioning stone veneer and my husband said it would be way too heavy if it was completely stone due to the weight of the top and bottom shelf. This is 24” round so that can also gain me a bigger lampshade.

I’m a bit sad about the Uttermost marble table but maybe you’re right and it’s too short.

    @flo mangan

This lamp has a 14” wide shade and is 24” high. It’s lucite not porcelain but I love the color, Would work width wise with Serena and Lily table.

I love the end table. With white top and shelf golds will recede but play nice with your other features. I think the French Blue Lamp color isn’t right color. You need stronger blue or even green. Your earthy color leather sofa dominates your color palette and your art is strong color too. I will continue to look. But if that table is 24-25 high it would work. 👏🏻

Great, ordering tomorrow. I wouldn’t mind green or a cobalt blue if that’s what you mean by stronger blue. @flo mangan

Did the tables yesterday. We spray painted them instead of using Rub n Buff because we thought it would be quicker. I like the gold we chose but it’s not shiny like gold metal would be. Not sure if we should redo them.Does the gold look odd not shiny? Received the small chair back from the upholsterer. Also, haven’t painted baker’s rack yet because I decided I’d like to do it a different color. Opinions? And Flo if you’re around. @flo mangan

Thanks ptrekel and Flo. I hope my upholsterer never retires, he is literally the only upholsterer anywhere close to me. Glad you like the gold. There are a lot of green choices, I like the idea of green for the baker’s rack.

Went to Home Depot and none of the greens are remotely close to the green of the chair fabric. Did find a blue that is very close or we could spray the baker’s rack the same gold as the tables or white. The fabric’s white background is accurate in the second pic not the first. I guess I’m leaning toward gold. Flo do you have an opinion? Thanks! @flo mangan

My new sunroom furniture arrived today. Flo Mangan was correct when she saw creme as the background of the pillow fabric. The small chair to the right I had recovered and it is white and green. The green in it does match the pillow fabric. The striped chair has a white stripe. Is there anyway to save this short of getting new pillows? I love the pillow fabric. I also would like either a new fan or light fixture. We don’t turn the fan on but it provides a lot of nice light to read by.

I’m bumping this up because if no one has an opinion about the pillows I’m hoping for some ideas about what to replace the fan with. @flo mangan are you around? Thanks!

Hi! I think the pillows are fine. Try putting one of the printed ones on the chair and the blue one on the rattan chair. Just leave one on right corner of love seat. Try that. Did we discuss indoor outdoor rug in this space? A rug to anchor the seating area that picked up multiple colors would be nice. See how that works.

The darker blob on left of sofa is my attempt to block that printed pillow out not a dark blue pillow. 😊

Hi Flo! I’ll move the pillows, that’s an easy fix! Yes, you mentioned a rug but I don’t know if I can get one. The only rugs that work for me are orientals (They clean like a dream) due to Theo who vomits. If he were to vomit on a “regular” rug I think it would be ruined. (Ask me how I know.) Color wise, I’m not sure an oriental will work in the room so maybe I’m left with no rug? What kind of light fixture could I get? I don’t like that fan but need decent light. Thanks for responding! @flo mangan
