Lobelia fan scarlet

last modified: 4 years ago

Anyone else grow these? just bought some, tag says they like part shade but pretty moist soil, which makes sense b/c we have native red lobelia on local river banks and at woods edge close to bank but in fairly shaded spot. Fan Scarlet Lobelia I saw at another nursery said full sun. I planted some a few yrs ago in an east-facing spot that stayed fairly moist and got lots of very bright morning sun until about noon but the next spring they came up & struggled all summer until dying before fall, despite regular watering. So I thought maybe they needed more (full) sun but now Im not sure. Id like to find out from someone who actually grows them before I plant these. Heres a pic of the wild native cardinal flower from one of our recent canoe trips and I realize it may be slightly different from the ”fan scarlet” cultivar w/ the darker purple leaves. These were the ones growing at the edge of the woods but still pretty shaded. TIA.
