I collect dwarf Hinoki cypress and have grown both. With conifers, mature size is a factor of the rate of growth. Both are considered true dwarfs so have an annual growth rate of anywhere from 1-6 inches. But they will continue to grow at that rate indefinitely, hence the "mature" size depends on how long the are grown. And because that annual growth rate is variable, you will get variable answers as to sizing as well :-)

Nana Lutea was the selection I grew the longest (before moving and changing gardens) and after 15 years or so was right around 5' tall, if that is at all helpful.

Very Lovely KW. The smaller variant of yours I saw awhile back and it sang to my heart from a distance away.....but I did not get it. Prior to that if not recent, I was just anti -all things evergreen-. I think partially because when I think of evergreen, what comes to my mind is the privacy walls of arbs. evergreens. But these hinokis are something totally different....in which I've come to appreciate. Curious, Has it taken on that beautiful shape itself or have you done some pruning to create those pockets within.

Going back to the OP and the Title .

Why when I google both - Nana Lutea comes up -everywhere- but even on some sites dedicated on conifer descriptions, Verdoni is not coming up as -frequent- as Nana Lutea ?

My Nursery has at least 10+ 3G Nana Lutea around. Zero on the Verdoni. I feel like it's more like a 2 in a 3G pot....

The Verdoni was what drew my eyes that I saw in person . I cannot recall it it was a 5G or a more mature shrub in a 3G, but the foliage was ahhhhh-mazing.. Gee whiz. I think I might have to extend my nursery hunt by another 120 mile radius

@a1an You’re so right about the appeal of Hinoki Cypress - totally different than the usual evergreen with its fan shaped tips & the pockets they create! I have a few true dwarf Hinokis around my yard both in ground & in pots & I love them all. It took me awhile to appreciate their beauty as well. My favorite true dwarf is Butterball, also a yellow & about the size of a head of iceberg lettuce after a couple years in ground. After posting my picture I took another look at my Verdoni - it does stand @ 5’ but it’s also on a bit of a berm so the actual plant height is a just a bit over 4’! As I said, it has increased in base width more than height. I have never pruned this tree - the shape is one of its natural positive attributes. My tree came from Iseli Nursery which is a wholesaler in Boring, OR just south of me in WA. I bought it at a local nursery. I don't know your location but in mine, PNW, varieties of Hinoki may be more readily available. When I Googled Hinoki "Verdoni" cypress I do receive info & images of the Verdoni. I think Lutea is similar in size & shape but is solid green. The gold of the verdoni makes it quite eyecatching!

Yes, some pages and lotsa pics of Veroni do come up. When I say a deep dive, there are many sites online and pages that - sell- NL online as well as descriptors but when I go to coniferking.com or even this site - https://conifergardening.com/specialty-gardens/, verdoni is not listed. On Kigi, it is, but I think it's a smaller scale shop. My nurseries stock of dwarfs are from Iseli as well.

Ha. All these years, I've never walked into the -evergreen- section as I was deadset that it was not for me ! Probably still wouldn't be - except for the Verdoni that was GLOWING when it caught my eye and I walked over to see it. Now, my new - additions- will be dwarf conifers as I figure out siting and such.

but on another recent thread with a linked nursery, see their list. Lutea is on there but not Veroni.

Anyhow , I posted on this thread on how Lutea seems to be more common everywhere I look than Veroni. Maybe I'm just mis-reading my interpretations when I see much more offerings on Lutea and don't see Veroni on the list

MIssed this thread until now. I have two 'Verdoni', don't know who the growers were but almost certainly Iseli or Buchholz. Nice plant.
