grafted weeping cherry tree pruning

I have a grafted weeping cherry tree where the rootstock is taking over the tree to the point that the ‘sucker’ is now nearly the size of the trunk. We want to prune it to reclaim the weeping effect but want to make sure we aren’t killing the tree in the process! Any input much appreciated!
