Pool lighting for 13x27' + 8' sunshelf? How light 9' rain waterfall?

Our pool contractor originally speced the pool with 3 lights in pool and 1 in spa. However, Jandy just recommended 5 in the pool, 1 in spa and 2 in sunshelf. This seems like a lot. Thoughts?

Also, we are doing a 9' rain waterfall on sunshelf. Trying to figure if we had LED light strip to waterfall unit or do lights on sunshelf shining up?

idk, i think night swimming should not light up the sky............. i do think you should have 2 in the shelf, because maybe you only want to have those on? so two switches.

oh yes I agree! The lighting upwards would not travel far as they are under water about 8-10'. My guess they would shine up the waterflow about 3-4'. So I either light up the waterfall from under the water shinging up the water, or we do a light on the waterfall bar itself.

We are doing a similar sized pool and the plan has 2 in the pool area, 1 in the hot tub and 2 microbright on the pool shelf. We are also doing 2 of the fire/water bowls, so those will be the focal point when we are entertaining.

@chispa That's good to know. Are you doing one on each side of the pool shelf? They were suggesting 1- 12W light but only because we plan to light up the waterfall somehow

We are a Jandy dealer for 35 years and we use the light layout/design from their lighting department.

5 lights is not too much. The nicheless LED's are meant to be set in multiples to cast an even amount of light with as few shadows and hot spots as possible.

We have gone through all the generations of these lights for 15 years now prior to Jandy owning them. We have not installed a traditional incandescent light in that time.

The location and the number of lights are based on the interior color and the design of the pool. Trust what they recommend. We have for years.

They set the 5 on the house side so you don't look directly at the light.

The 6w light in the spa is fine. That size is good for fills such as steps or benches.

If they are white lights, they can be dimmed. Colored lights cannot be dimmed.

@mysticpools thanks so much for the info! Have you done the rain waterfalls? I can do two verticals lights shining up on the 9’ waterfall as shown OR do a built in LED strip in waterfall. Not sure which would light up fountain better. And then do I still need a sun shelf light? Jandy can’t do the lighted 9’ waterfall so they couldn’t factor that in their design. ....

We have not installed the rain waterfalls only the standard sheer descent.

15+ years ago, we installed a sheer descent that had a fiber optic light strip and it worked nice. Now of course, fiber lights are replaced with LED. Still some fiber out there though.

A light on the sun shelf would be nice. Be certain they know the water depth.

Here's a project we are starting this week. 18x40 with a perimeter overflow spa that has a 2' trough around the perimeter.

The sun shelf is the width of the pool (18') and it's 6' wide. Notice the 6w lights placed along it's wall.

The plaster will be a French Gray/Krystalkrete

Great pic! What is the cost for each light? That’s a lot of lights!

It will be even nicer in person when completed.

This amount is typical for our projects.

Last pool we completed, a 1,000 sf freeform, we installed 8 lights in the pool. 1 in the 10' spa. Quite a colorful light show.

Sorry, I don't broadcast prices. Every region is different and therefore pricing can be different.

So I am starting to plan the exact same thing!can someone give me a ballpark of what the above plan costs…Below $75,000 below $100.? Or am I being naive anf it will be $150000??

@jane mauksch, the price of a pool will vary quite a bit based on geographic location and local labor rates and availability. Our pool project in FL, similar to the ones above will be around $100K. That is just the pool and does not include any pavers around the pool as those are done by the house builder. It also didn't include any electrical and water hookup preparations and cement pad for equipment as those were also done by the builder.

Thanks for the response. It’s a Gunite or fiberglass?
