How does this "Mud room" relate to the house? From the bench it appears it may be just a back entrance in which case that wall of dark is very incongruent now.

A mudroom is most often at the back or side entrance. The beautiful storage cabinet in the mudroom relates to the matching bench in the front entry area. I would love to see more pictures of this home.

Thanks for all the comments, Houzzers. Below are floor plans and some additional before and after shots that may better illustrate the work done here. This mudroom has three entrances: a side front entrance, a side rear entrance, and an entrance from the garage.

An existing closet was removed (where the boot bench is now) and the staircase remodeled to open up the entire space. We also remodeled the powder room.
