That actually looks like a very charming house that hasn’t reached its full potential. I’m not sure about that front porch you are going to add. do you have drawings? Are ther any other changes you have planned? It really could be a darling home.

You own it, so you must know the house is 1901 and Colonial Revival. For sure?

It looks so Federal to me. So, just wondering if the entry was an add on at some point.

Anyway, house is so adorable. A porch: could you add it to the right side of the house? Is there a way you could add an inside door to get to it? On this idea for added porch roof line.

All white, paint the dental molding in a higher gloss finish.

If the front door is solid, go black and leave the back door with windows white.

Judianna I am not sure about the colonial revival. It was an old apartment for mill workers and farm workers. The house is in front of Mel Gibsons old estate ! Not sure how we will design porch - we have tons to do before hand !

I see what you mean about connecting the two doors...you will have to remove the railings (which really don't belong, anyway?).

You could save the right side balance room for an addition down the road.

Not ugly -- it has real potential. Add your porch not only across the entire front of the house but also have it wrap around both sides as a shed roof with hip corners -- except do add a forward facing gable over the entire front entry door bump out.

I absolutely love this charming little house with all of its quirkiness. I am following this post and would love to see any updates you make along the way.

For the doors I’d ideally want to see wood. If new doors aren’t in the cards I’d paint them a blue or black.

Your so-called “ugly duckling” will become an adorable “swan.”

Small immediate easy improvements. After painting the doors put back the shutters, add window boxes, filled year round. In winter small boxwood. See have torn out overgrown shrubs, add back some low growing shrubs plus layered look perennial “cottage” style flowers for some depth. Pots of flowers by the door.

Your house isn’t ugly. It just needs some love and attention. The front-front door would be where you greet guests, so a roof or awning to protect guests from rain or snow would be good. The second door is perhaps to the kitchen? Is there a garage or parking area where you unload groceries to take inside? We could use more pictures and perhaps a floor-plan of the first floor done to-scale on graph paper so we can see how the rooms relate to each other. An outdoor seating/entertaining area would be a nice addition in the future. I see you are tackling the landscape…that’s good, but getting the inside fixed up may be more important with fall here and winter so near. Regarding door colors, guests should see the main front door right away, so I would paint the door a medium version of a red or blue or green which you like most. The moldings and trim can stay white, which I think is more traditional. If you want to connect the front door to the side door, a wrap around porch would accomplish that, and if it is feasible, take the deck around to the right side and add a pergola or roof over an entertaining-zone deck if possible. Lots of choices once you have all mechanicals checked and repaired or brought up to code.

A blue/green (BM Wythe Blue) could be a more modern, fresher update than solid black and might be a nice compliment to your brick chimney.

I think because your side door is mostly glass you could get away with painting it the same color but leave the grille (grid/muntin) area white to match the trim colors and your other window grids. Such a cute house with lots of character!

Red for the front door. Side door should blend into the background, so leave it white. Dentil molding should be white like your other trim. If it were mine, I would do a lot more with the Landscaping to up the charm factor.

Is there a slight sag in the roofline? It's hard to tell from the photo. It's not uncommon for a building this old to need some work on the rafters even if the roof is watertight and with good shingles. My mother just went through that. The sag was not even noticeable to most people but a builder spotted it.. Possibly have an inspection if you are not sure.

One idea: If you like one particular color, do the front door the brighter version and go down the paint strip to a darker version for the back door. Another: bright yellow in the front, leave the back door white with yellow trim. Another: same color but 25% whiter for the back door.
Your house is adorable and unique. Keep us all posted on the changes. I agree with @felizlady that inside comes first and wait till spring for landscaping expenses.

Jackie brown - we had an inspection- my husband is also an engineer- this house is 1901! Everything is uneven but that’s the charm in our eyes

We are not even going to bother with landscape because a deck is going there - we decided in doing wood deck and go over the brick. This is down the road though - bathroom next and then kitchen. We also decided on dark door like a slate grey. I will post soon

I just returned from the Boston area. I can tell you the first thing we noticed was the beautiful colored doors and the flowers. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to paint the door and add pots of flowers.

Lots of great comments here! What I find particularly quirky is that you have a balustrade over the front door without a door or window there 'to appear' any access to it. I think, eventually, I'd want three equally-sized, equally-spaced windows on the second floor facade. I wouldn't see such a change diminishing it's charm at all.

What room is over the front door? If it’s a bedroom, you might want to install French doors to the balcony and put some chairs there.

It is a charming house. I love old houses. You have received great suggestions. I like a red front door. I would wait to do landscaping once all the exterior work is done on the house. I agree with a porch for the front or a wrap around. Is the back door a kitchen driveway entrance? If it is not a door that is used often you might think about replacing it with a window. Is there an option to add another window on the front upstairs for balance? Please post photos and let us see your changes.

cute house! the deck looks odd since you can't get to it! maybe remove that and do a metal roof overhang for the porch. Or do a gabled portion over the front door area.
